Undefeated Terrapins (3-0) travel to Camp Randall to face reeling Badgers (2-1) in crucial conference clash
Madison, Wisconsin – Maryland football faces its biggest test of the season Saturday when the undefeated Terrapins travel to Camp Randall Stadium to take on Wisconsin in their Big Ten opener.
The 3-0 Terrapins will look to make history against a Wisconsin program that has dominated the all-time series 4-0. Maryland enters riding an 18-game winning streak against non-conference opponents, while the Badgers are reeling from a 38-14 beatdown at the hands of #19 Alabama last week.
Kickoff is set for noon ET with live coverage on NBC.
Coach’s Perspective
Maryland head coach Michael Locksley was measured but confident about the upcoming challenge.
“Malik [Washington] has shown incredible poise for a true freshman,” Locksley said. “Going into Camp Randall is never easy, but I love how our team has prepared this week. Wisconsin is a proud program, and we respect that, but we’re not intimidated.”
Quarterback Malik Washington acknowledged the magnitude of the moment. “This is why you play college football – big road games in historic stadiums,” he noted. “We’ve been watching film, and we know Wisconsin is going to bring everything they have. We’re ready for that challenge.”
Defensive coordinator Brian Williams highlighted the team’s defensive mindset. “Our goal is to create turnovers and put pressure on their quarterback,” Williams explained. “We’ve been opportunistic all season, and we don’t plan to change that approach against Wisconsin.”
Maryland’s Perfect Start
The Terrapins have been dominant through three games, outscoring opponents 125-33 while showcasing both explosive offense and suffocating defense.
Maryland’s 44-17 victory over Towson last Saturday extended their perfect start. The Terps scored 34 first-half points and forced three consecutive three-and-outs to open the game, demonstrating the balanced attack that has made them one of college football’s early surprises.
This marks the fourth time in five years Maryland has started 3-0, tying them with Ohio State and Oregon for second-most such starts since 2021.
Washington’s Historic Freshman Campaign
True freshman quarterback Malik Washington has been nothing short of spectacular, leading all FBS first-year players with 773 passing yards and six touchdowns through three games.
Washington’s numbers put him in elite company. He’s just the third Maryland quarterback in 30 years to reach those marks after three games, joining Taulia Tagovailoa (2021) and C.J. Brown (2013).
The freshman phenom attempted 96 passes before throwing his first career interception – the longest streak by a Terp since Danny O’Brien in 2010. His 11.86 yards per attempt against Towson marked the highest by any Maryland true freshman in the last 30 seasons.
Defensive Dominance
Maryland’s defense has been equally impressive, allowing just 11.0 points per game to rank 20th nationally in scoring defense.
The Terps lead the nation with eight turnovers gained and seven interceptions. Their +6 turnover margin ranks second nationally, providing excellent field position for Washington and the offense.
La’Khi Roland’s 100-yard pick-six against Towson was the longest interception return for a touchdown by any Maryland player in 60 years. The defense has also recorded 10 sacks, ranking 10th nationally and second in the Big Ten.
Wisconsin’s Struggles
The Badgers enter Saturday’s contest looking to bounce back from their humbling loss to Alabama. Wisconsin managed just 14 points against the Crimson Tide while surrendering 38 in a performance that raised questions about its Big Ten title aspirations.
At 2-1, Wisconsin faces the pressure of avoiding a 0-1 start in conference play that could derail its season before October arrives.
Series History Favors Badgers
Wisconsin holds a commanding 4-0 advantage in the all-time series, with its most recent meeting resulting in a 23-10 Badgers victory at Camp Randall in November 2022.
However, Maryland has shown they can move the ball against Wisconsin, rushing for at least 100 yards in each of their last three meetings – tied for their second-longest active streak against a conference opponent.
Key Matchups
The battle in the trenches will be crucial. Maryland’s pass rush, led by Sidney Stewart’s team-high three sacks, must pressure Wisconsin’s quarterback while the Terps’ secondary looks to add to their nation-leading interception total.
On offense, Washington will face his first true road test in a hostile Big Ten environment. His connection with senior receivers Shaleak Knotts (196 receiving yards), Jalil Farooq (103 career catches), and Octavian Smith Jr. will be vital.
Championship Implications
For Maryland, this game represents a chance to announce itself as a legitimate Big Ten contender. A victory would mark their first-ever win over Wisconsin and provide massive momentum heading deeper into conference play.
Wisconsin, meanwhile, needs a bounce-back performance to keep its championship hopes alive. A home loss to an unproven Maryland squad would raise serious questions about the program’s direction.
The Verdict
Saturday’s noon kickoff at Camp Randall Stadium will test everything Maryland has built through three weeks. Can the Terrapins’ explosive offense and opportunistic defense travel well enough to finally solve Wisconsin?
With Washington’s historic start and Maryland’s defensive dominance, this could be the year the Terrapins finally break through against the Badgers. Prediction: Maryland 28 – Wisconsin 7
