The beloved Goaltender of the 60’s & 70’s passed away in his sleep
Associated Press through ESPN- Hockey Hall of Famer and Former New York Rangers goaltender Eddie Giacomin passed away at the age of 86 due to natural causes in his home on Sunday, September 14th. The Rangers put out a statement after learning from a family member of the news of his passing.
Giacomin was loved by Rangers Fans
Every time Giacomin made a great save in the net at Madison Square Garden, you heard the chants of EDD-IE!, EDD-IE!, EDD-IE!, every single time. He was an aggressive goaltender who left his crease to stop the puck from entering the net. A Vezina trophy winner in the 1970-71 season.
The night Rangers Fans Cheered for Giacomin as a Red Wing
That famous night on November 2nd, 1975, at Madison Square Garden, when the Detroit Red Wings came to town with Eddie Giacomin in net. The Rangers didn’t have a good start to their season, so they put Giacomin on waivers, and the Red Wings claimed him on Halloween. That night, Rangers fans chanted Giacomin’s name, cheered all the saves he made as the Red Wings won 6-4.
Banner Raising and Hockey Hall of Famer
Giacomin was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 1987. The Rangers honored him by retiring his jersey with a banner-raising ceremony on March 15th, 1989. He was the second former Ranger to hold that honor, along with Rod Gilbert.
The Rangers Centennial Season begins on Tuesday, October 7th, 8:00 PM Eastern at Madison Square Garden on ESPN.
