Florham Park, NJ-The three-year kick returner has been released by the Jets due to Fumble issues.
Kickoff return strip and fumble in Week 1
Head Coach Aaron Glenn and General Manager Darreny Mougey decided to release Xavier Gipson for his fumble during the kickoff return when he was stripped during the kickoff return in the fourth quarter. It led to a quick score to give the Steelers the lead.
Two mistakes against the Steelers
Not just the kickoff return fumble in the fourth quarter, but also had a kickoff return in the first quarter. Missed an opportunity for a touchdown but slipped and fell on his own at the Jets’ 40-yard line. Dropped the ball and was never touched by a Steeler when he celebrated the run. Marcelino McCrary-Ball jumps on top of the loose ball to prevent a possible Steelers Touchdown
Ten Fumbles in Three Years
Gipson’s three-year tenure with the Jets as a kick and punt returner had decent stats, but fumbling was an issue. Started the road game in Buffalo in 2023 by muffing the opening kickoff, and continued to have concentration issues handling the ball.
The only memorable highlight of his Jets Tenure
No one will ever forget his overtime punt return for a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in Game 1 of the home and season opener. After Aaron Rodgers was lost after four snaps and Zach Wilson came in to save the game. Gipson’s punt return TD was over 50 yards on the Jets’ side of the field.
Aaron Glenn is keeping his promise for accountability
Head Coach Aaron Glenn has kept his word about making players accountable for their actions when it comes to glaring mistakes and turnovers. He gave Gipson a fair chance, and it didn’t last long after Week 1. This new regime is standing pat on what they say and what they mean. Culture change has come right away.
