Max Verstappen delivered a masterclass performance at the Temple of Speed, claiming his first victory since May with a commanding lights-to-flag triumph at the Italian Grand Prix that rewrote Formula 1 history books.
Record-Breaking Performance
The reigning world champion didn’t just win at Monza – he obliterated records in the process. Verstappen’s victory came at an average speed of 250.706 km/h (155.791 mph), making it the fastest world championship Grand Prix in F1 history. The total race time of 1:13:24.325 shattered Michael Schumacher’s 2003 record by nearly a full minute.
Max Verstappen Thoughts
“It was a great day for us,” Verstappen said after his dominant display. “The car was really enjoyable. I could manage the pace quite well throughout that first stint, and we pitted at the right time. It was a fantastic execution by the whole team.”
Early Drama Sets the Stage
The race began with immediate fireworks as Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris went wheel-to-wheel down the main straight. Verstappen squeezed Norris onto the grass before cutting the first chicane to maintain his lead, prompting race stewards to intervene.
In a sporting gesture to avoid penalties, Red Bull instructed Verstappen to yield position to Norris on lap two. However, the Dutch driver’s superior pace became evident as he reclaimed the lead around the outside of Turn 1 just two laps later, never to be challenged again.
McLaren’s Strategic Miscue
While Verstappen cruised to victory, drama unfolded behind him during the pit stop phase. McLaren’s attempt to gain an advantage by extending their drivers’ stints backfired spectacularly when a slow tire change for Norris allowed teammate Oscar Piastri to emerge ahead.
The awkward situation forced McLaren into damage control mode, ordering Piastri to yield second place to Norris in a controversial team orders decision reminiscent of their Hungarian GP swap last season.
“I felt like I was there quite a long time,” Norris reflected on his problematic pit stop. “Every now and then we make mistakes as a team, and today was one of them.”
Championship Implications
Verstappen’s third victory of the season comes at a crucial time, demonstrating that Red Bull remains a formidable force despite McLaren’s recent dominance. The victory also showcased the team’s strategic excellence and Verstappen’s ability to deliver under pressure.
Norris finished second, extending his streak of runner-up finishes in all of Verstappen’s 2025 victories, while Piastri settled for third. The McLaren duo’s championship battle tightened, with Piastri’s lead over Norris narrowing to just 31 points.
Ferrari’s Home Disappointment
Charles Leclerc secured fourth place for Ferrari, providing some consolation for the passionate Tifosi who had hoped for a home victory. Lewis Hamilton, making his Ferrari debut at Monza, recovered from a five-place grid penalty to finish sixth, giving the Scuderia valuable points despite missing the podium.
Midfield Heroics
The race produced several standout performances in the midfield. Alex Albon delivered another points finish for Williams in seventh, while Isack Hadjar’s remarkable drive from the pit lane to tenth place earned Racing Bulls their first Monza point since 2022.
“I’m obviously very happy as I think we achieved the maximum we could have done today,” said Hadjar, whose recovery drive highlighted his growing reputation as a rising star.
Historical Context
Verstappen’s victory marked several significant milestones:
- First pole-to-flag winner at Monza since 2019
- Third Monza victory in four years
- 66th career Grand Prix victory
- Only the second time the fastest race record has been broken in 54 years
Looking Forward
The victory sends a clear message to Verstappen’s rivals as the championship battle intensifies. With his combination of raw pace, strategic thinking, and race craft on full display, the three-time world champion proved he remains the benchmark in Formula 1.
The circus now heads to Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 19-21, where Verstappen will look to build on this momentum-shifting performance.
