FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the media Friday ahead of his highly anticipated coaching debut with the organization, emphasizing his focus on the players while providing key injury updates for Sunday’s season opener.
Injury Report Updates
Vrabel delivered concise updates on several key players heading into Week 1. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez has been ruled out for the season opener, while rookie offensive tackle Will Campbell is listed as questionable. Safety Charles Woods appears likely to play, with Vrabel indicating a probable status.
“Alex will – Double A will play. I think Marcus [Jones] will play. Everybody’s got to be ready to go,” Vrabel said regarding defensive back Alex Austin’s expected role filling in for Gonzalez.
Offensive Line Takes Shape
The Patriots will start rookie Jared Wilson at left guard for Sunday’s opener, pairing him with fellow rookie Will Campbell on the left side of the offensive line when Campbell is healthy.
“Jared will start at left guard,” Vrabel confirmed. “Well, he’s worked hard and competed. Again, we’re going to end up playing different combinations of guys, but Jared will be there Sunday.”
Vrabel acknowledged the challenges of starting two rookies on the same side but expressed confidence in their development: “I want them to have fun. I want them to enjoy it and understand that mistakes are going to happen. We’ll just pick it up, and we’ll move on.”

Player-First Philosophy
When asked about his emotions heading into his first game as Patriots head coach, Vrabel quickly redirected attention to his players.
“I think it’s going to be about the players. I think that’s the most important thing, is to make it about the players,” Vrabel said. “They put a lot of work in. We ask a lot of them, and then I feel like the games are their opportunity to go play.”
Learning from Past Season Openers
Vrabel addressed his 0-3 record in season openers during his tenure in Tennessee, offering a straightforward assessment of what went wrong.
“No, just have to play better. Missed a field goal. Got boat raced by Arizona. Just play better, take care of the football, win the second half, things like that,” Vrabel explained.
Staff Appreciation
The veteran coach took time to publicly thank his coaching staff and organization for their support during the transition.
“I appreciate the staff. I want to publicly say that. I appreciate the staff helping me do this and getting us to this point. We don’t do any of this by ourselves,” Vrabel said. “I can’t thank them enough for being on this journey with me.”
Looking Ahead
With preparation nearly complete, Vrabel emphasized the importance of Sunday’s performance in determining the team’s readiness.
“We’re another day closer to finding out because, really, what happens on Sunday is going to start to dictate have we’ve gotten it, have we’ve learned, and whether we understand how critical some of these things are,” he said.
