Head coach discusses quick turnaround, quarterback progress, and evaluation process in final preseason preparations
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the media Monday regarding the team’s preparations for Thursday’s preseason finale, emphasizing the importance of managing player reps during the quick turnaround while continuing roster evaluations.
Quick Turnaround Requires Strategic Planning
With limited time between games, Vrabel indicated the coaching staff will carefully manage which players see action Thursday night, particularly focusing on red zone work and providing meaningful reps to players fighting for roster spots.
“Quick turnaround. These are going to be two important days here,” Vrabel said. “There will be a group of guys that get a lot of reps tomorrow that are going to be good, important reps. Based on how that goes, that’ll tell me a lot for Thursday night.”
Quarterback Development Continues
Vrabel provided updates on rookie quarterback Drake Maye’s progress, acknowledging areas for improvement while praising his competitive spirit. The coach emphasized the importance of ball security and decision-making, particularly regarding tipped passes over the middle of the field.
“I like where he’s at, it’s just we’ve got to fix that,” Vrabel said regarding Maye’s ball placement and timing with receivers. “We talked to him about not taking a senseless hit outside the pocket on second-and-ten. If there’s nobody there, throw it away.”
Injury Updates and Player Status
Several players will not participate in upcoming practices, with Isaiah Iton ruled out for Thursday’s game. Vrabel indicated he would not anticipate Kyle Williams, Iton, or Efton Chism III practicing Monday, with their availability being evaluated day-to-day.
Christian Gonzalez and Kendrick Bourne will not practice or play this weekend, according to the head coach.
Offensive Line Competition Intensifies
The competition for starting positions along the offensive line continues, with players like Vederian Lowe working at multiple positions. Vrabel acknowledged the challenges of playing different sides of the line, noting the adjustment period required for communication and assignments.
“When you’re on one side, and you hear calls, and a play means something and then you’re on the right, what your job is on the other side may sound simple, but when it’s quick, I can at least appreciate where some of the maybe miscommunication or the assignment could get mixed up,” Vrabel explained.
Defensive Coordination Praised
Vrabel highlighted the team defense concept using Milton Williams as an example, demonstrating how individual contributions don’t always show up in statistics but contribute to overall success. He emphasized the importance of players understanding their role in the bigger picture.
The Patriots continue preparations for their final preseason game Thursday as roster decisions loom ahead of the regular season.
