NEW YORK, NY — The 2025 NFL season kicks off with multiple players positioned to achieve significant career milestones and historic marks. From MVP showdowns to touchdown records, Week 1 promises compelling storylines across the league.
MVP Clash on Sunday Night Football
Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson will create history when they meet on Sunday Night Football. This matchup marks only the fifth time in NFL history that the two most recent MVP winners have faced off in Week 1.
Allen, the reigning 2024 Associated Press MVP, hosts Jackson, who won the award in both 2019 and 2023. Previous Week 1 MVP meetings include legendary matchups between Hall of Famers like Barry Sanders vs. Brett Favre and Earl Campbell vs. Terry Bradshaw.
Mahomes Chasing Manning’s Record
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes enters his ninth season with 291 career touchdown passes, including playoffs. With just three touchdown passes against the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Mahomes can surpass Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (293) for the most touchdown passes in a player’s first nine seasons.
Additionally, Mahomes needs only one regular-season touchdown pass to break Dan Marino’s record for most touchdown passes by a player under 30. The Chiefs star turns 30 on September 17.
Burrow’s Rapid Rise Continues
Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow enters Week 1 with 19,001 passing yards in just 69 career games. With 201 passing yards against Cleveland, he can surpass Jameis Winston (19,201) for third-most passing yards in a player’s first 70 games. Only Patrick Mahomes (21,150) and Matthew Stafford (19,953) rank higher.
Stafford Approaching Elite Company
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford sits 10th all-time with 59,809 career passing yards. He needs just 191 yards against Houston to become the second-fastest player to reach 60,000 career passing yards, trailing only Drew Brees.
Furthermore, Stafford can join an exclusive company in season openers. With 291 passing yards, he’ll join Brees and Tom Brady as the only players with 5,000 passing yards in season-opening games.
Henry Chasing Hall of Fame Territory
Baltimore running back Derrick Henry leads all active players with 106 career rushing touchdowns. One rushing touchdown on Sunday Night Football will move him past Hall of Famer Jim Brown for sixth place in NFL history.
Young Receivers Reaching Milestones
Two stars from the 2020 draft class are approaching significant milestones. Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson (495 receptions) and Dallas’s CeeDee Lamb (496) can become the youngest and third-youngest players to reach 500 career receptions.
Jefferson, at 26 years and 84 days, would break Larry Fitzgerald’s record as the youngest to achieve this milestone.
Season-Long Records in Sight
Beyond Week 1, several players are positioned for historic achievements throughout 2025:
Josh Allen can become the fifth quarterback with 90 wins in his first eight seasons, joining elite company including Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady.
Travis Kelce needs three touchdown catches to become the fourth tight end with 100 career playoff and regular-season touchdowns.
Ja’Marr Chase can become the first player with 80 receptions, 1,000 yards, and seven touchdowns in each of his first five seasons.
Myles Garrett needs six sacks to surpass Reggie White for most sacks by a player under 30 since 1982.
Looking Ahead
These milestones highlight the exceptional talent entering the 2025 season. As teams prepare for kickoff, fans can witness potential history-making performances from some of the NFL’s brightest stars.
The 2025 NFL season begins with international flair as Kansas City faces Los Angeles in São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday night, followed by a full slate of Week 1 action.
