Rutgers survives a season opener thriller as Scarlet Knights Rally Behind Kaliakmanis’ Clutch Play and Record-Setting Special Teams
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – In a heart-stopping season opener that had 46,907 fans on the edge of their seats, Rutgers survived the season opener thriller with a 34-31 victory over Ohio at SHI Stadium on Thursday night. The Scarlet Knights overcame a second-half collapse to secure their eighth consecutive season-opening victory.
First Half Explosion Sets the Stage For Rutgers
Rutgers came out firing on all cylinders, building a commanding 31-17 halftime lead behind quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis’ precision passing and a dominant ground game.
The Scarlet Knights struck first with a methodical 12-play, 75-yard opening drive, capped by Antwan Raymond’s 14-yard touchdown run. The drive showcased Rutgers’ aggressive fourth-down philosophy, converting twice on fourth down to establish early dominance.
Kaliakmanis then delivered the play of the first half – a spectacular 54-yard touchdown bomb to DT Sheffield that extended the lead to 17-7. The connection came on the very next play after a Rutgers field goal, stunning the Ohio defense with its suddenness.
“All night, I thought he was very sharp,” head coach Greg Schiano said of his quarterback. “His growth and development keeps showing through. So I sure am glad we have him.”

Special Teams Magic Changes Momentum in Thriller
The turning point came via special teams wizardry. Kaj Sanders knifed through Ohio’s protection to block a punt, which Cam Miller scooped up in the end zone for a touchdown. The sequence gave Rutgers a 31-14 lead and sent the crowd into a frenzy.
“They had a big part in that blocked punt because they caused the illegal procedure, which backed them up five more yards and made me feel more comfortable calling a punt block,” Schiano praised the student section’s impact.
Ohio’s Furious Comeback
The Bobcats refused to fold, mounting an impressive second-half rally behind quarterback Parker Navarro’s dual-threat ability. Navarro, who finished with 93 rushing yards and three total touchdowns, led Ohio to 14 unanswered points in the third quarter to tie the game 31-31.
“Parker Navarro is certainly a special athlete,” Schiano acknowledged. “He’s not just quick. He’s fast. There’s a difference. This guy had the speed to run away from fast players.”
Fourth Quarter Drama and Clutch Execution
With the game hanging in the balance, Jai Patel restored Rutgers’ lead with a 26-yard field goal – his 15th consecutive make, setting a new school record.
The defining moment came with 6:41 remaining when Rutgers faced fourth-and-seven at Ohio’s 28-yard line. Rather than punt and trust his defense, Schiano rolled the dice.
“You look at the situation. You know if you complete it, the game’s over,” Schiano explained. “I have a lot of faith in our quarterback. He’s a winner.”
Kaliakmanis delivered under pressure, finding Sheffield for a crucial 10-yard gain that sealed the victory. The Scarlet Knights went 5-for-5 on fourth-down conversions, showcasing their aggressive mentality.
Defensive Growing Pains
While the offense clicked, Rutgers’ defense showed signs of inexperience with six first-time starters. Moses Walker led the unit with a career-high 13 tackles, but the Bobcats still managed 440 total yards.
“It’s a work-in-progress, and it will be all year long,” Schiano admitted. “We had a lot of guys out there that haven’t played together. Fundamentally, that’s how you do it. You don’t go create new defenses. You create better fundamentals.”
Statistical Standouts
Rutgers Offense:
- Athan Kaliakmanis: 18-23, 252 yards, 2 TDs
- Ian Strong: 7 catches, 100 yards
- Antwan Raymond: 14 carries, 87 yards, 1 TD
- CJ Campbell Jr.: 11 carries, 71 yards
Ohio Offense:
- Parker Navarro: 21-31, 239 yards, 3 passing TDs; 93 rushing yards, 1 TD
- Chase Hendricks: 9 catches, 115 yards
Looking Ahead
The victory improves Rutgers to 13-0 in regular-season non-conference games under Schiano and extends their season-opening winning streak to eight games. However, the defensive struggles provide plenty of teaching material as the Scarlet Knights prepare for Miami (Ohio) on September 6.
“Celebrate and then we get back to work,” Schiano told his team. “We’re going to get back to work tomorrow, and I’m excited to get in here with the players and watch the tape.”
For Ohio, the narrow defeat showcased their potential under head coach Brian Smith, with Navarro emerging as a legitimate threat in the MAC.
“I’m proud of our kids. They showed great resiliency,” Smith said. “Our guys were right there and we just couldn’t make the plays at the end that we needed to.”
