AFC East and NFC West clubs to showcase community-inspired designs in divisional matchups throughout the 2025 season

New York — The National Football League and Nike have unveiled a groundbreaking uniform initiative that promises to redefine how teams connect with their communities and celebrate regional rivalries. The “Rivalries” program introduces eight specially designed uniforms that will debut during high-stakes divisional matchups, marking a significant evolution in NFL merchandising and fan engagement.

Community-Driven Design Philosophy

The inaugural Rivalries collection features teams from the AFC East and NFC West divisions, with each uniform meticulously crafted to reflect the unique cultural identity and storied traditions of their respective cities. Unlike traditional alternate uniforms, these designs emerge from extensive collaboration between Nike designers and individual clubs to ensure authentic representation of local pride and community values.

“The unveiling of the first eight Rivalries club uniforms and fan gear marks a significant moment for the NFL, Nike, and Fanatics, as creativity and innovation merge together to deliver a new take on what it means to be a rival,” explained Taryn Hutt, vice president of club marketing at the NFL. “Rivalries will bring fresh energy to the field with each new uniform, while providing a platform to amplify the community and hometown pride that is rooted in each NFL fan.”

Strategic Rollout Schedule

The program launches with a carefully orchestrated schedule that maximizes the impact of divisional rivalries:

  • Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks (September 25)
  • Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets (September 29)
  • Buffalo Bills vs. New England Patriots (October 5)
  • New England Patriots vs. New York Jets (November 13)
  • Los Angeles Rams vs. Seattle Seahawks (November 16)
  • New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins (December 7)
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. Los Angeles Rams (December 18)
  • San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks (January 4, 2026)

Each participating team will debut its Rivalries uniform during a single home game against a division rival, creating marquee moments that celebrate both competition and community identity.

Nike’s Design Innovation

Nike’s approach to the Rivalries program represents a departure from traditional uniform design methodology, emphasizing authentic storytelling over purely aesthetic considerations.

“Nike has a rich history with football, and we’re excited to partner with the NFL on this new Rivalries program to help grow the sport and expand it for the next generation,” said Ryan Airhart, director of NFL apparel product design at Nike. “Each uniform was designed in collaboration with the club it represents to authentically reflect what makes their team, fans, and communities wholly unique.”

The design process involved extensive research into local traditions, historical significance, and cultural elements that define each team’s relationship with their city and fanbase.

Long-Term Integration and Expansion

Following their on-field debuts, Rivalries uniforms will become permanent additions to each team’s uniform rotation for three years, supplementing rather than replacing existing alternate options. This integration ensures sustained visibility and fan engagement beyond the initial novelty period.

The program’s expansion timeline extends through 2028, with additional Rivalries uniforms planned for debut during the 2026, 2027, and 2028 seasons. This phased approach allows the NFL and Nike to refine the concept while building anticipation for future reveals.

Comprehensive Merchandising Strategy

The Rivalries program extends far beyond on-field uniforms, encompassing a complete ecosystem of fan merchandise and collectibles. Beginning September 10, fans can purchase Rivalries jerseys, sideline apparel, headwear, and fan gear through multiple channels, including Nike.com, NFLshop.com, Fanatics.com, and individual team stores.

Riddell’s participation adds another dimension to the program, offering all eight Rivalries helmets in multiple sizes as collectibles. The global reach includes availability across Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Australia through NFL Shop sites and select international retailers.

Digital Integration and Gaming

EA Sports will enhance the Rivalries experience through Madden 26 integration, featuring Nike Rivalries jerseys, unique stadium updates, and content updates across various game modes. This digital component ensures the program reaches younger demographics and gaming enthusiasts who represent a crucial growth market for the NFL.

Limited Edition Collaborations

The program includes plans for limited-edition items created through collaborations between clubs and local brands, dropping near each Rivalries game. These exclusive releases will be promoted through official NFL and Nike social media channels, creating additional buzz and collectibility around each uniform debut.

Market Impact and Fan Engagement

The Rivalries program represents a strategic evolution in how professional sports leagues approach uniform design and fan merchandise. By emphasizing community connection over purely aesthetic considerations, the NFL and Nike are betting that authentic storytelling will drive deeper fan engagement and stronger merchandise sales.

The focus on divisional rivalries taps into the most emotionally charged matchups in professional football, when fan passion typically peaks and merchandise sales historically perform strongest. The three-year integration period provides sustained revenue opportunities while building long-term brand loyalty.

Looking Forward

As the NFL continues expanding its global reach and seeking new revenue streams, the Rivalries program offers a template for how traditional sports properties can innovate while respecting historical traditions. The success of this inaugural collection will likely influence similar initiatives across other professional sports leagues.

The September 25 debut with the Arizona Cardinals hosting the Seattle Seahawks will serve as the program’s first test, setting the tone for what could become a defining element of NFL presentation and fan culture for years to come.
