Vrabel Addresses Quarterback Development and Defensive Challenges
The New England Patriots wrapped up their second day of joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday, with Head Coach Mike Vrabel emphasizing consistency and execution as his team prepares for the regular season.
Vrabel Pleased with Overall Progress
Coach Vrabel compared the joint practice sessions to actual games, noting the natural ebb and flow of competition. “These practices are like a game – we’ve said that. There are ups and downs. We hit some plays. They hit some plays,” he explained. The Patriots were able to capitalize in crucial situations, including a successful two-minute drill that showcased their ability to perform under pressure.
The coach praised his team’s ability to adapt on the fly against Minnesota’s complex defensive schemes. “To come up here without any real practice or any look and be able to have some good plays, and again, some plays that we have to improve on, but I think it’s a good start,” Vrabel said.
Maye Shows Composure Under Pressure
Quarterback Drake Maye continued to impress with his poise against the Vikings’ aggressive defense. Vrabel highlighted Maye’s ability to avoid panic situations that often plague young quarterbacks. “It’s easy to go into a blender when you’re seeing a bunch of this stuff and kind of scrambling and turning one less than favorable play into a real shit storm. So, I didn’t see that,” the coach noted.
Maye’s communication skills and processing ability stood out, particularly when the offensive line provided adequate protection. “I thought he was able to communicate and get the things that he wanted and then hit some plays because of it,” Vrabel added.
Offensive Line Development Continues
The joint practices provided valuable learning opportunities for the Patriots’ offensive line, particularly rookie Will Campbell. While acknowledging that Campbell had “some good plays and had some plays where he got beat inside,” Vrabel emphasized the developmental nature of these experiences for young linemen.
The coach stressed the importance of inside-out protection principles, explaining how quarterback pocket presence, offensive line fundamentals, and timing must work in harmony. “We have to be firm in the middle and we have to stay inside-out and the quarterback has to transfer up into the pocket,” he detailed.
Red Zone Focus Remains Priority
With red zone work scheduled for Thursday’s practice, Vrabel emphasized the critical nature of avoiding negative plays in scoring territory. “If you have a play where there’s a penalty or you lose yardage, the percentage that ends in a touchdown really decreases drastically,” he explained.
The coach highlighted the precision required in red zone situations, where “every yard matters” and “the timing is quicker and the windows are much tighter.”
Coaching Staff Adjustments
Vrabel revealed that offensive coordinator Terrell Williams will continue calling plays from the press box, a decision made after evaluating different approaches during the preseason opener against Washington. “There’s a lot of positives to being upstairs, to being able to see things and being able to call the game from there,” he noted.
Quarterback Competition Clarified
Regarding the backup quarterback position, Vrabel indicated that veteran Joshua Dobbs currently holds the number two spot, though he emphasized the need for improved consistency. “Josh is the backup right now. Not that that couldn’t change,” he said, while noting that Dobbs needs better ball placement and timing.
Looking Forward
As the Patriots continue their preseason preparation, the joint practices with Minnesota have provided valuable testing against a well-coached opponent with multiple defensive looks. The focus remains on building consistency and execution as the regular season approaches.
