The New York Jets came into MetLife Stadium as the road team in the annual preseason matchup as they took on the New York Football Giants. The Snoopy Bowl has always been the buzz of the preseason in the New York City tri-state area when these two sides go against each other. But at the end of the day, even though it’s still the preseason, the Giants defeated the Jets by a final score of 31-12.
The majority of the Jets’ starters had two series against the Giants, as they showed some brilliant moments with the running game. You can see the run being the bread and butter for this upcoming season. Making several chunk runs and having success making first downs. Especially when they went for it again on fourth and one, this time converting it for the second attempt in preseason.
Braelon Allen looked fabulous again every time he had the ball, carrying it seven times for 34 yards, with 11 yards being the longest in the game. Kene Nwangwu ran the ball six times for 31 yards. He also showed why he will be a dangerous return man for the Jets to start the season, as he nearly broke away for a kickoff return touchdown, but was just stopped with the final defender taking him down at the last moment at the 34 yard line.
The passing game is still an issue as the Giants’ front seven found ways to disrupt Justin Fields from throwing the ball. Flushed him out of the pocket several times and forced him to make bad throws or double-teamed Garrett Wilson. But on the final passing attempt in the first quarter from Fields, he did throw the ball to Wilson, but was grabbed before the ball got to him, and not a single flag was thrown for pass interference. Fields ended his night going one for five.
With the rest of the team playing, the Jets had some solid moments, but nothing big to penetrate the Giants’ Defense, which looked good in their second preseason game. There were two solid interceptions from the defense. One was from Quantez Stiggers, who looks improved in these two games in the preseason, and Dean Clark got a pick as both men secured the ball in the endzone.
The lone touchdown of the night came from Brady Cook in the fourth quarter as the Jets were able to be four yards away from the end zone. Finally, a big chance for Quentin Skinner as he was at the back end of the endzone and dove for the ball with his outstretched arms and hauled it in. Unfortunately, the Jets tried to go for the two-point conversion, but sadly failed.
Two field goals were converted. Both by Nick Folk to give the Jets their first six points of the first half. His first one went for 38 yards with 2:24 left to play in the first quarter, while he converted in the second quarter from 31 yards. His leg is still strong, and now wearing Number 18 on his jersey. While this wasn’t one of their best performances in the two preseason games, Head Coach Aaron Glenn made sure he got his point across
“When you look at the overall game, it wasn’t good enough, and that’s no surprise,” Glenn said. “And on all levels. I thought we were sloppy, I thought we were undisciplined, ma,n we got to play much better and that’s the beauty of this game,” Glenn said. “You know it’s the beauty of this game because it always teaches you lessons. One week, man, you can be riding high because things are going extremely well. Then the next week, man, it can put you on you [expletive].”
So now the Jets will head back to the practice field to prepare for their final preseason game against the defending Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. Usually, the starters won’t get any time in the final game, but because this is the Aaron Glenn era of New York Jets football, we might see one more round of touches with the starters.
