The European league seasons will be starting very soon across the continent, but first comes the big UEFA Super Cup match as the Champions League Winner in Paris Saint-Germain of France, battled with the Europa League Winners in Tottenham Hotspurs of England. It looked to be a one-sided affair, but the match was evened up late and then all over in the shootout as PSG defeated Spurs four to three in the shootout, after a two goal draw in regulation.
The penalty kick shootout looked to be in favor of Spurs as they went first, with Dominic Solanke scoring the first penalty, but when Vitinha took his spot kick, he hit the far post and out, putting the Champions League winners behind. The second round saw both sides converting until the third round of penalties came. That’s when Micky Van de Ven went to the near side and was stopped by Lucas Chevalier, then Ousmane Dembele scored to level it.
Tottenham would miss for the second straight penalty, when Mathys Tel faked out Chevalier, forcing him to dive to his left, but missed the net completely to the right. That gave Lee Kang-In the chance to convert his spot kick for the three-to-two lead. In the final round of regulation penalties, Pedro Porro scored to level it all at three, but the shootout winner was scored by PSG’s Nuno Mendes, and the French Capital club is back winning their first trophy of the new season.

In regulation time, Spurs took the lead. They attacked the far side of the pitch as the ball was crossed beautifully into the area. Joao Paulinho took the shot one time, but Chevalier made the save with a parry of his right hand, which redirected the ball off the crossbar, and then the rebound went right toward Van de Ven as he powered it home in the 39th minute.
In the second half, Spurs scored their second goal of the Super Cup. Earned a free kick at the far side, Pedro Porro delivered a fantastic bending ball that was going toward the near side of the pitch. Out of nowhere and remaining onside was Christian Romero, who took the shot one time. The ball had a slight deflection underneath Chevalier’s left arm and inside the sidenetting in the 48th minute.

It looked like PSG was about to have their luck run out, but they fought back very late. They attacked down the far side, where Vitinha gave a short cross to Lee Kang-In, who was just a foot outside the area. He ripped a hard shot across the area and inside the back post to pull one back in the 85th minute, as that quickly felt it was the start of a comeback.
After six minutes of stoppage time was added, that’s when the magic of PSG returned and forced the shootout. Achraf Hakimi attacked down the near side, finding Dembele just outside the area. As he delivered a low cross to the middle of the Spurs Area, out of nowhere, was Gonzalo Ramos, who took the shot one time and beat Guglielmo Vicario, sending all the PSG fans into a complete frenzy.
And now all of Paris is celebrating a trophy before their Ligue 1 season is underway, while Tottenham fans are preparing for a brand new Premier League Season as they will attempt to knock off Liverpool for the trophy at the end of the season. This was an exciting UEFA Super Cup where many thought it was over by the 84th minute, but once again, the Champions League winners had other ideas and completed the comeback.
Now we wait for the draws for the Champions League, Europa League, and the Conference League, as we wait for another trip to the Championship finals of all European Continental club championships. Can PSG repeat, or will there be a new champion crowned in the 2025-26 season? We shall find out very soon.
