For a long time, professional soccer teams, both domestic and international, always came to the Meadowlands Sports Complex to play their games at the former Giants Stadium. The 1994 World Cup was held there, the original New York Cosmos were present, and the last professional club to play at Giants Stadium was the New York Red Bulls, who played many matches on the field turf.
When Sports Illustrated Stadium was built (Originally called Red Bull Arena) and opened in 2010, the NYC Tri-State Area finally had a ground that was the crown jewel of American Soccer. Many fans had called the Cathedral of Football, as it had the feel of Europe inside the United States. The very first match was the beloved club of Pele as Santos FC of Brazil played a friendly, and at that time, a young Neymar was on the pitch.
From that point on, every single home game was a show, and memorable moments were playing every single match. Juan Pablo Angel’s winning free kick from long range that hit the far post, then hit Pat Onstad’s back and into the net, sent everyone into a frenzy against the Houston Dynamo. Or how about when Thierry Henry scored an Olimpico delivered from the far corner and deflected in off the near post.
Or when Mike Grella became the fastest goal scorer in club and MLS history by scoring a goal inside the opening six seconds from the kickoff. Two amazing goals from Brandon Barkledge defeated his former club in the Hate DC Week Derby. The first Hudson River Derby match as Bradley Wright-Phillips score both goals in a two goals to one victory.
Two of the three Supporters Shields were won at this stadium, many friendly matches, CONCACAF Gold Cup Matches, and US Men’s & Women’s National Team Friendly matches including a World Cup Qualifier were played at this stadium, and just recently this season for the Red Bulls a seven goals to nil Red Wedding Victory over the defending MLS Cup Champions, Los Angeles Galaxy.
So many magical moments and so many positive comments, as this stadium has been a beacon for clubs and national teams who wanted to come and play at this stadium, and such a pristine pitch that never gives anyone any issue whatsoever. That all changed before the Red Bulls began their 2025 Leagues Cup schedule.
Unknown to many, a music concert popped up late July of this year. The Rufus Du Sol concert lasted three days at the stadium and the Stage, along with a white tarp covering the pitch that had many rows of folding chairs, caused the discoloration of the grass from green to brown. During the Leagues Cup matches, both Red Bulls games, two NYCFC Games, and CF Montreal as the road team were forced to play on such a horrible surface.
There is a brown line going down the middle of the pitch, and both 6-yard boxes for the keeper were chewed up and didn’t look like it was on a professional level. It looked like chewed-up fields located in Central Park that haven’t been manicured for a very long time. The club’s groundscrew normally takes care of the fields at both the Stadium and at their training facility in Whippany, New Jersey. It’s always in top condition.
But now the pitch at Sports Illustrated Stadium looks like a minefield, and all of that glam and glitter has now stopped shining. It’s very sad to talk about this because of the amount of love and care these people have given to that field for over a decade and a half. Now it’s all gone down the drain within a matter of weeks. All for a pop-up concert that no one knew was coming except for those fans of that band.
Red Bulls Head Coach Sandro Schwarz didn’t hold back his criticisms on the pitch after the club’s two goals to one victory over Real Salt Lake. He mixed in his post-match comments with how upset and very demonstrative attitude toward that field, not only against his side, but for the opponent as well. Their next home match will be against the Philadelphia Union next weekend, and I don’t believe it will be fixed by then.
Either as a New York Red Bulls supporter, or a fan of the game in the United States. Every time you walk inside the Stadium, going up the stairs to the concourse, you will always look toward the field and smile when you see that beautiful grass pitch that puts a smile on your face, and gets you ready to support your club at every home match. Now it makes you feel sad and angry. Hopefully, this will never happen again.
