The New York Jets came prepared and ready to go in their first preseason game at Historic Lambeau Field, taking on the Green Bay Packers. A lot of things went right for the Jets, with certain things going wrong, but once again, the bad habits by some of the players will be cleaned up by Aaron Glenn and his staff. But until then, it was a solid win for the Jets.
Justin Fields looked poised in the pocket
For a quarter and a half, Justin Fields looked comfortable and played consistently well in the pocket for the Jets. While at times he did use his legs to avoid sacks and gained positive yardage, Fields had no issues throwing the ball to several targets out on the field. He even scored on the opening drive for a 13 yard run by breaking through the defensive linebackers and heading for the endzone.
Jay Tufele excelled for the Jets
For the entire first half, Tufele was active and hungry to prove his worth to the coaching staff. After four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and a year with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he signed with the Jets, hoping to knock off someone and grab a spot on the defense. He sacked Jordan Love and a half sack on Malik Willis. But what was also impressive was being aware when Leonard Taylor III strip-sacked Willis, and Tufele quickly pounced on the loose ball inside the end zone and held it for the Touchdown.
Running Backs look strong and dangerous
While Breece Hall had some solid moments, the duo of Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis were racking up the yardage every time their number was called to run with the ball. Allen had eight carries for 33 yards, and Davis had six carries for 14 yards. But the one who had the most for the entire second half was Donovan Edwards with nine carries for 42 yards.
Strong play at the Line of Scrimmage
Both teams at the Line of Scrimmage did a fantastic job of cutting down the Packers’ attempts to make plays on either side of the ball. Fields, Brady Cook, and Adrian Martinez were protected very well by the offensive line. The front seven of the defense had a total of four sacks and made sure the Packers didn’t have any explosive plays that would harm their lead on the scoreboard.
Undisciplined Penalties
Outside of the in-game penalties, the Jets committed on the field that negated a touchdown or a positive play; they had three penalties that were undisciplined and very troublesome. Michael Clemons was involved in a shoving match and was flagged for his participation, along with his opponent. Then back to back unnecessary roughness calls for late hits out of bounds by Eric Watts and Marcelino McCrary Ball.
Aaron Glenn benched Clemons for the rest of the game, and McCrary Ball got an earful from Glenn when he walked back to the sidelines. Throughout training camp, Glenn made sure to bring in the NFL Officials early to eliminate the penalty situation so that his team wouldn’t be hit with unnecessary flags for the entire game.
Special Teams did well
You hope to see something great when Special Teams does their job. While Nick Folk got to convert one P.A.T., Harrison Mevis found ways to convert all three of his field goals for a combined total of nine points. But on Punt return blocking, the Jets found ways to stop the Packers from advancing. Former Jets Wide Receiver MeCole Hardman took a hard tackle from Quantez Stiggers, and he muffed a punt that allowed the Jets to recover it at the Packers nine yard line.
Aaron Glenn’s First Win in Preseason Action
While it didn’t show during the press conference after the game, this had to feel good for Glenn getting that first victory, even if it was during the preseason. He and his coaching staff set the tone to bring this team out of the negative and into the positive. Tanner Engstrand called a fantastic game plan on offense, while Steve Wilkes did a great job with the defense. But overall, Glenn made it work, and that’s what we hope to see when Week 1 of the new NFL Season starts next month.
