Carles Gil breaks Revolution goal contributions record while Matt Turner shines in emotional return to Foxborough
Foxborough, Mass.— On a perfect summer evening at Gillette Stadium, the New England Revolution delivered their most complete performance in weeks, defeating D.C. United 2-0 in front of 21,538 fans, celebrating “Alumni Night.” The victory was highlighted by Carles Gil’s historic achievement and Matt Turner’s triumphant return to his former home.
Gil Enters Revolution History Books
The night belonged to Carles Gil, whose goal and assist performance propelled him past Revolution legend Taylor Twellman for the most goal contributions in club history. With 130 career goal involvements, Gil now stands alone atop the franchise record books, surpassing Twellman’s mark of 129.
“It’s special to break the record. Like I’ve said many times, [Twellman] a legend here in the club, in the league. I have more games [played] than him, I think, to break the record. But it’s a pleasure to have these words about him, and he’s a big legend.”

The Spanish midfielder’s milestone came fittingly during the 100th all-time meeting between these two MLS original clubs. His 27th game-winning assist extended his club record, while his goal tied him with Teal Bunbury for fourth in Revolution history across all competitions with 53 tallies.
Turner’s Emotional Homecoming
Matt Turner’s return to Gillette Stadium after more than three years away provided one of the evening’s most compelling storylines. The U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper, on loan from Nottingham Forest, looked as comfortable as ever in his Revolution return, making three crucial saves to earn his 23rd MLS clean sheet.
Turner was tested early and often in the first half, with his best save coming against D.C.’s Hosei Kijima, who broke free on the right side only to be denied by Turner’s diving effort. The American international also commanded his penalty area with authority, collecting three high claims and demonstrating the confidence that made him a Revolution fan favorite.
“Yeah, it was really nice being back. Obviously, it was pretty emotional walking out for me, just being back in the stadium, feeling the love from the warmup to before the game, to everything. I love it here. I love New England. It’s really like a home for me. I wouldn’t say I had any expectation. For me, it was just more about showing up, but also understanding that there’s something to achieve, something to do. I want to also put in good performances. I always wear my heart on my sleeve when I’m on the pitch, so it felt really nice to be well-received and to be back.”
Second-Half Surge Decides Contest
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams create chances, the Revolution found their breakthrough in the 62nd minute through the Gil-Leo Campana connection that has become increasingly dangerous this season.
Gil’s perfectly weighted cross found Campana at the near post, where the Ecuadorian striker guided his header past D.C. goalkeeper Kim Joon Hong for his fifth goal of the campaign. The strike continued Campana’s torrid form against D.C. United, improving his record to six goals and one assist in seven career appearances against the Black and Red.
Eight minutes later, the Revolution doubled their advantage through a moment of individual brilliance from Gil. After receiving a pass from homegrown defender Peyton Miller just outside the penalty area, Gil needed only one touch to juke his defender before curling a right-footed effort into the far corner.
Miller’s Continued Development
Peyton Miller’s assist on Gil’s goal marked another milestone for the homegrown defender, who made his 30th MLS appearance while recording his second assist of the season. The 22-year-old’s continued development has been one of the bright spots in what has been an inconsistent season for the Revolution.
Miller’s ability to contribute in the attacking third while maintaining his defensive responsibilities exemplifies the modern fullback role that has become essential in MLS. His connection with Gil on the insurance goal demonstrated the growing chemistry between the Revolution’s veterans and emerging talents.
Defensive Solidity Returns
The clean sheet was New England’s ninth of the campaign, tying them for second in MLS this season and bringing them within one of the club record of 10 set in three consecutive seasons from 2005-07. The defensive performance was particularly impressive given D.C. United’s early pressure and the presence of veteran striker Christian Benteke.
Mamadou Fofana and Brayan Ceballos formed a solid central defensive partnership, while the return of Turner provided the stability that has been missing during his absence. The Revolution’s defensive structure, which had been questioned during recent struggles, looked organized and confident throughout the 90 minutes.
Historical Significance
Saturday’s match marked the 100th meeting between New England and D.C. United across all competitions, with the victory evening the all-time regular season series at 37-37-16. The Revolution improved to 24-11-9 at home against D.C. United in regular season play, including a dominant 9-1-5 record in their last 15 meetings at Gillette Stadium.
The historical context added weight to Gil’s record-breaking performance, as he joined an elite group of Revolution legends while helping secure three crucial points in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Ganago’s Return Provides Depth
The return of Ignatius Ganago from a quad injury that sidelined him for nine matches provided additional depth for head coach Caleb Porter. Ganago’s 63rd-minute substitution for Luca Langoni marked his first appearance since May 31, giving the Revolution another attacking option as they navigate a crucial stretch of the season.
Looking Ahead
The victory sets up an intriguing homestand finale as the Revolution prepare to welcome Los Angeles FC to Gillette Stadium next Saturday, August 16. The 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff against the Western Conference contenders will test whether New England can build on this performance against higher-quality opposition.
With Gil now firmly established as the club’s all-time leader in goal contributions and Turner providing stability between the posts, the Revolution appear to have the foundation necessary for a late-season push toward the MLS Cup Playoffs.
