Since the New York Jets began training camp, there have been a lot of positives happening with this team under new head coach Aaron Glenn. He has made every attempt to put the negative out of everyone’s misery and look ahead to a brand new era of Jets football. While it has worked so far, one day of training camp, it will creep back in, and on Saturday, August 2nd, it finally did.
PENALTY FILLED SCRIMMAGE
Practice ended a bit early, as the Jets had a rough day with penalties called by the NFL Officials, which Aaron Glenn wasn’t happy to see. Even though he praised the officials for doing their job and showing the players what they have been doing wrong, there were some positives. Justin Fields did run it in for a touchdown in one of the two positive plays.
While it might be a bit frustrating for Glenn to see this happen today, the truth is, it’s a good thing it has happened now. Better to do it at training camp than to have it in a game that counts. The players will learn from this and will be better once they return from their day off on Sunday, and get back at it on Monday, August 4th. No one wants to see undisciplined penalties in a single day, but let it out of their system and get back out there again soon.
INJURIES ARE SHOWING
As of now, the Jets have a few concerns regarding injuries during training camp, the last two to three days. Punt Returner and Wide Receiver Xavier Gipson left practice this Saturday with a shoulder injury.. Left Guard JohnSimpson is out one to two weeks with a back issue, and Safety Malachi Moore with a Strained Oblique on August 1st.
But the big name that has everyone worried is Defensive Tackle Quinnen Williams with a calf injury on July 31st. He will be out for a week or two, as Aaron Glenn wants to get him back slowly and not rush him to return. It’s important that one of the main cogs in the front seven of the defense is back a hundred percent and ready to go for game one of the season.
AARON GLENN THANKFUL & EMOTIONAL
As Glenn talked to the media, he was thankful that the Jets gave him a second chance at being with the team. Not just drafting him as a player, but now as a head coach. As the fans came to Florham Park to watch the Jets train and prepare for their scrimmage, he heard the J-E-T-S JETS!, JETS! JETS! chant, and it got him emotional very quickly. He felt grateful to return to the team that drafted him into the NFL.
It’s nice to be emotional as a former player to now coach the team that hired him to try and change things around, but while training camp looks to be o.k., the proof is always in the pudding when the regular season starts the weekend after the Labor Day holiday. Aaron Glenn needs to show he is the right man for the job, and he needs to show it right away.
