Red Bulls Need a Strong Summer Transfer Window

Now that the Leagues Cup is here, we can take a breath and observe what has happened to the club up to this point. After their lifeless loss to the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field last week, the Red Bulls are officially out of a playoff position as they have fallen to tenth place in the Eastern Conference Table, and are looking for some lifelines.

While the summer transfer window is currently open, at this point in time, their only transfer has been Swedish Midfielder Gustav Berggren, and currently, he hasn’t arrived yet to join the squad. Which is why he isn’t on the Leagues Cup expanded roster. But at this point, the supporters are upset and demanding that action in the transfer window take place.

Many were hoping that Timo Werner was going to be the big offensive move this club was going to make, but while rumors continue to swirl that there’s a slight chance he can still come over, it feels like that hope will be heading out the window, and that move is done with. With the injuries this club has suffered from Lewis Morgan missing another chunk of the season and Cameron Harper being done for the year, it’s tough to see where the offense will come.

The partnership between Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Emil Forsberg has been excellent, but when there are times they don’t link up for a chance on goal, everything has fallen apart. Mohammed Sofo has been a revelation since getting called up for the second match of the season, and scored in the home opener. He has done well, but at times, you can see him struggling as he shows why he’s still learning to play in the top flight of American Soccer.

But now, this is the time when Head of Sports Jochen Schneider and Sporting Director Julian DeGuzman need to step up to the plate and improve this squad. While the phones should be ringing off the hook, they must continue to dial to make moves and save the rest of the season. While they still have a makeup game against the Philadelphia Union for the rainout in the US Open Cup Quarterfinals at Subaru Park, nine matches are left for the rest of the season.

After their three Leagues Cup games, they will play Sunday Night Soccer at home against Real Salt Lake, then host the Union. Another Sunday Night Soccer at Charlotte, two matches against the Columbus Crew, two road trips to Portland and Montreal, then at home against FC Cincinnati and the Hudson River Derby against NYCFC. A possibility of acquiring 27 points to put them back over the playoff line and continuing their streak, qualifying for the playoffs.

Back in 2023, I thought that streak came to an end until Luquinhas was taken down inside the Nashville area at Geodis Park, and got a penalty. John Tolkin took the spot kick and scored to just put the Red Bulls into the wild card round on Decision Day. No goals at all until that penalty was awarded late in second-half stoppage time. While many will still say this is MLS, something screwy always happens. This league is still unpredictable.

The way this team has been playing, but recently, these last two games, the question marks are flying. The fingers of blame are being sharpened and ready to be pointed at the players, at the head coach, at DeGuzman, and at Schneider. The photo of “NOT GOOD ENOUGH” is being circulated across social media. After reaching the MLS Cup last year, the fans want more. They want improvement on the pitch, or else they will demand improvement in the front office. Maybe Red Bull Global might oblige.

But until then, this is DeGuzman & Schneider’s time as the spotlight is on them to help the squad improve before it’s too late. They are only two points outside of the last playoff spot, and Chicago still has their issues. If they go on a run, it needs to be right away after the Leagues Cup is over. I do believe these two know that time is precious, as they need to make these moves right away to end the requests for their removal.
