New York, NY– A National Football League employee was seriously injured during a deadly shooting Monday evening at the midtown Manhattan building that houses the NFL’s headquarters, Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed in a memo to staff.
The incident at 345 Park Avenue resulted in four fatalities, including an off-duty New York City police officer, with another person critically wounded, according to authorities. The NFL employee remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Commissioner’s Response
“One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition,” Goodell wrote in the internal memo obtained by ESPN. “NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family. We believe that all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for, and the building has been nearly cleared.”
The commissioner announced immediate security enhancements and advised New York-based employees to work remotely on Tuesday or take the day off as the organization processes the traumatic event.
Incident Details
Emergency crews responded to the 44-story office building around 6:30 p.m. following reports of gunshots. The NFL occupies floors five through eight of the building, which also houses several major financial firms.
Police identified the gunman as Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, who died by suicide at the scene. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed Tamura had a “documented mental health history,” though investigators are still working to determine his motive for targeting the specific location.
“We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location,” Tisch said during a news conference.
Building Response
NFL employees were immediately ordered to shelter in place as the situation unfolded, according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington. Four additional individuals sustained minor injuries while attempting to evacuate the building during the chaos.
The 345 Park Avenue building houses numerous high-profile tenants, making it a significant commercial hub in Manhattan’s business district.
Ongoing Investigation
New York City Mayor Eric Adams indicated that officials are still “unraveling” the full scope of what occurred during the deadly incident. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
The NFL has implemented increased security measures at its offices, with Goodell promising a heightened security presence “in the days and weeks to come” as the organization supports affected employees and their families.
League Support
In his message to staff, Goodell emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting all employees during this difficult time.
“Every one of you is a valued member of the NFL family,” the commissioner wrote. “We will get through this together.”
The incident marks a tragic day for the NFL community and highlights the ongoing concerns about workplace violence in major metropolitan areas.
