Former Manchester United and Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has delivered inspiring news about his health journey, announcing he is “no longer bothered by cancer” and expressing renewed interest in returning to top-level football management.
The 73-year-old coaching legend, who publicly revealed his prostate cancer diagnosis three years ago while managing the Dutch national team, shared the positive update during an appearance on Dutch talk show “Humberto” on Friday.
“Two years ago, I had a few operations. It was all bad then. But it all worked out in the end,” van Gaal explained with characteristic directness. “I have check-ups every few months, and that’s going well. I’m getting fitter and fitter.”
Van Gaal’s cancer battle began during his tenure as Netherlands head coach, a role he held until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Since then, the respected tactician has stepped away from active coaching while focusing on his health and recovery.
The veteran manager, whose illustrious career includes Champions League success with Ajax in 1995 and stints at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United, has been clear about his future aspirations. While he maintains no interest in returning to club management, van Gaal indicated that coaching a top-tier national team could entice him back to the dugout.

Currently serving as a special advisor to Ajax, the club where he achieved European glory nearly three decades ago, van Gaal’s wealth of experience continues to benefit the Amsterdam giants in an advisory capacity.
His health journey has been closely followed by the football community, with many colleagues and former players expressing support throughout his treatment. The positive update represents not only personal triumph but also hope for others facing similar challenges.
Van Gaal’s potential return to international management would be significant for any nation fortunate enough to secure his services. His tactical acumen, combined with decades of experience at the highest level, makes him an attractive candidate for countries seeking World Cup or European Championship success.
The football world will undoubtedly welcome van Gaal’s recovery news, and his openness about the cancer journey continues to inspire both within and beyond the sport.
