Red Bulls Draw With Ten Men Quakes

The New York Red Bulls traveled to Silicon Valley to face the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park, on a nice and comfortable Northern California summer. As the Red Bulls were fighting to get a result against the refreshed Quakes under legendary head coach Bruce Arena, but at the end of the match the Red Bulls came away with a one goal draw.

The Red Bulls opened the scoring in the 19th minute, as Kyle Duncan was along the near side. Made a nice pass to Peter Stroud, who found space to spring Emil Forsberg with a lovely ball. The Red Bulls Captain challenged three defenders, made several moves, lost the ball, and then regained it. Caught Daniel off his line and smashed it inside the top of the net.

All throughout the first half, the Red Bulls played a strong defensive game by absorbing the attacking runs by the Earthquakes. When you need to face powerful forwards like Chicho Arango, Josef Martínez, and Christian Espinoza, you are in for a very long evening, and the Red Bulls played very well to prevent them from scoring any chances they had.

When the second half began, the Quakes were able to even up on the scoreboard. In the 58th minute, a looping ball came to the path of Espinoza along the near side. As he controlled it and attacked toward the area, it was Vitor Costa rushing down the middle of the park, got the pass to beat Coronel to the inside of the near post. Costa was able to outrun Kyle Duncan to the ball and convert.

The Red Bulls all of a sudden took a numerical advantage as DeJuan Jones received two yellow cards, and then the red card to send him off to the showers early. He earned his first yellow card in the 54th minute for persistent infringement, but it would be ten minutes later that he got his second yellow for a reckless challenge on Peter Stroud, and off the pitch he went.

The Red Bulls tried to get the game winning goal, and they thought they earned it in the 82nd minute by Sean Nealis. The far side assistant raised his flag because second half substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting caused interference with the goalkeeper, and after a VAR check, the call was confirmed. While the Red Bulls did earn another point on the road, the disappointment was that they didn’t take advantage of being up a man.

“Performance was good today. Beginning was really good from our team, and then we scored a great goal. Great situation when we pass forward. Really good movement. Then from Emil (Forsberg) and with his quality. And after that, we lost a little bit the control of the game. And then we stayed in some moments a little bit too deep at this then also the quality of San Jose with these offensive players and with the wing backs on the side. Second half we concede one goal after long ball. We had a short moment for that transition moment. Then they were with the center backs, then directly play forward. Now it’s 1-1, one point on the road. That’s okay, especially here in San Jose, which is very difficult, and now we have to prepare to start the Philly week.” Said Head Coach Sandro Schwarz

The Red Bulls’ next two matches will both be on the road as they will face the Philadelphia Union twice within a week. EMIL FORSBERG: Scored his seventh of the season, and is on a two-match goal-scoring streak.

KYLE DUNCAN: Earned an assist, his third assist in two consecutive games, fourth assist of the season.

PETER STROUD: Earned an assist, his third assist of the season.
