The first group stage match in Group B of the 2025 Women’s Euros got off to a roaring start. One side is looking to get a foothold in this tournament against the defending champions, who want a second title after winning the Women’s World Cup. After the 90 minutes were over, Spain ended the match victorious by a final score of five goals to nil.
In the second minute, Spain scored quickly. As Olga was attacking down the far side touchline, she sent a long looping ball toward Esther Gonzalez attacking the middle of the pitch. AS she received the ball off her head and toward the net, Gonzalez found a way to tap that ball past the keeper and put her country in the lead.

In the 7th minute, Spain makes it two. After the first cross came in from the far side, it was headed out by the Portuguese defense, but Spain did recover. Ona Batlle passed the ball to Gonzalez, then the cross toward the middle of the area, and out of nowhere, Vicky Lopez got to the ball and hammered it home. The Spaniards were flying high, and this match hadn’t reached the 10 minute mark.
It became three in the 41st minute. Mariona Caldentey was inside the center circle and saw that Alexia Putellas was about to start a run. Caldentey sent the ball down the pitch, and in front of Alexia, as she got inside the area, Alexia dribbled, faked out the defender, and then she smashed it hard for her first goal of the match.
In the 43rd minute, Esther Gonzalez was in the right place at the right time. After Claudia Pina dribbled down to the endline on the far side, she tried to chip the keeper at a tight angle. The ball did hit the back post and out, but Gonzalez was positioned perfectly to deflect that ball inside an open net as she got her brace in this match.

The final goal for Spain came in second half stoppage time. As they continued to attack Portugal’s area, the ball came down the near side toward Salma Paralluelo. She crossed the ball in the middle, and it was a thunderous header inside the area by Christina Martin-Prieto as the 32-year-old earned her first cap as a substitute and ended the match in style.

Portugal was outclassed from the opening whistle to the closing whistle, as Spain kept coming after them with wave after wave and after wave of attacking runs every time they had the ball. When Portugal had the ball, you saw Spain with strong defense and forcing indecision on the Portuguese at every opportunity. It’s a strong start for the Spaniards, who want their first Women’s Euro championship.
Before the match started, there was a moment of silence for the memories of Diogo Jota, as the Liverpool & Portuguese international and his brother Andre Silva was killed in a car accident while on vacation in Spain after his country won the UEFA Nations League Title against the Spanish Football Federation.
