$10,000 donation supports kelp forest and native oyster restoration as part of the team’s 50th season community initiative
SEATTLE, WA-– The Seattle Seahawks and Lumen Field have announced a $10,000 donation to the Puget Sound Restoration Fund, supporting critical marine habitat restoration efforts throughout Washington’s coastal waters as part of the organization’s broader sustainability and community engagement commitments.
The partnership focuses on restoring foundational marine ecosystems, including kelp forests, native oyster beds, and water quality improvements that support the region’s saltwater food web.
Natural Connection Between Team and Mission
The collaboration carries symbolic significance, as ospreys—the bird species most closely associated with the Seahawks—depend directly on the healthy marine ecosystems the restoration fund works to preserve.
“Ospreys rely on a thriving saltwater food web in Puget Sound to provide the fish that they hunt,” said Jodie Toft, Executive Director of Puget Sound Restoration Fund. “It is perfectly fitting that the Seahawks and Lumen Field would lean in on supporting restoration of foundational elements of our food web—including the kelp forests that lie just below the surface, providing food and refuge for fish, crab, and a host of other species.”
Part of Milestone Anniversary Initiative
The donation represents one component of the Seahawks’ “Impacting 50 Communities” Initiative, launched in celebration of the franchise’s 50th season. Through this comprehensive campaign, the organization aims to create meaningful impact across 50 different communities through targeted events, programs, and initiatives throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
“We are excited to support Puget Sound Restoration Fund and their incredible work to restore and preserve our marine ecosystems through this donation,” said Christy Briggs, Sustainability Manager for the Seahawks and Lumen Field.
Stadium Sustainability Leadership
Lumen Field has established itself as a leader in NFL venue sustainability practices. In 2024, the stadium achieved TRUE precertification for its zero-waste practices, becoming only the second NFL facility to reach this milestone.
The venue, which hosts more than 2 million guests annually, diverts 90% of all waste from landfills through comprehensive recycling and composting programs, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to environmental stewardship beyond this marine conservation partnership.
Restoration Fund’s Conservation Mission
The Puget Sound Restoration Fund focuses on collaborative marine habitat restoration, water quality improvement, and native species recovery through hands-on in-water projects. The organization’s work directly supports ecosystem health while strengthening connections between communities and marine resources.
The fund’s comprehensive approach addresses multiple aspects of marine ecosystem restoration, from rebuilding key species populations to maintaining the overall health and productivity of Puget Sound’s marine environment.
This partnership between professional sports and environmental conservation demonstrates how community organizations can leverage local connections to support critical habitat restoration efforts in the Pacific Northwest.
