Jade Downie-Landry’s Historic Hat Trick Highlights Montreal’s Dominant Performance as Riveters’ Discipline Issues Continue

The Metropolitan Riveters’ promising start to their Professional Hockey Federation campaign hit a devastating roadblock in Montreal, as undisciplined play and critical defensive breakdowns led to a crushing 5-3 defeat to the Montreal Force. What began as a celebration of Kelly Babstock’s 100th professional career game quickly devolved into a painful reminder of the fundamental issues that continue to plague this talented but inconsistent Riveters squad.

Jade Downie-Landry’s historic performance—the first hat trick in PHF history—overshadowed what should have been a milestone night for the Riveters’ veteran forward. Instead, Montreal’s clinical execution exposed every weakness in the Metropolitan system, from penalty discipline to defensive positioning, leaving head coach Venla Hovi with serious questions about her team’s mental toughness and tactical awareness.

The loss extends the Riveters’ first losing streak of the season to two games, a concerning trend that threatens to derail what had been a promising start to their PHF campaign. More troubling than the result itself was the manner of the defeat—self-inflicted wounds that transformed a competitive match into a showcase for Montreal’s opportunistic attack.

First Period Promise Turns to Familiar Problems

The Riveters’ early dominance seemed to signal a return to form after recent struggles. Fanni Garat-Gasparics’ power-play goal just 30 seconds into their first man advantage gave Metropolitan the perfect start, capitalizing on Catherine Dubois’ holding penalty with clinical precision.

The goal itself was a thing of beauty—Anna Kilponen’s hard shot created the rebound opportunity that Garat-Gasparics finished with authority, lifting the puck high over the blocker-side shoulder for her first goal of the season. The assist combination of Kilponen and Minttu Tuominen showcased the kind of international talent that makes the Riveters dangerous when they execute properly.

But the celebration was short-lived. Just 37 seconds later, Kendall Cornine’s tripping penalty highlighted the discipline issues that have become this team’s defining characteristic. While the penalty kill successfully neutralized Montreal’s power play, the pattern was established—for every positive step forward, the Riveters would take two steps back through undisciplined play.

The period’s middle stages saw the Riveters create multiple scoring chances through Madison Packer and Regan Rust, demonstrating the offensive potential that makes their struggles so frustrating. But as pressure mounted, old habits emerged with devastating consequences.

Penalty Parade Costs Metropolitan Dearly

The Riveters’ penalty troubles reached critical mass as the first period progressed. Kelly Babstock’s head contact penalty at 11:52 was followed by Emilie Harley’s tripping call at 18:07, creating the kind of defensive chaos that championship teams cannot afford.

Montreal’s power-play goal with just 17 seconds remaining in the period perfectly encapsulated the Riveters’ self-destructive tendencies. Ann-Sophie Bettez’s finish came after Jade Downie-Landry picked the pocket of a Metropolitan defender, creating the kind of high-danger scoring chance that results from mental lapses under pressure.

The sequence was particularly galling for Riveters fans—goalkeeper McQuiggie made an excellent initial save on Downie-Landry’s shot, coming out aggressively to challenge the shooter. But the rebound fell perfectly for Bettez, who made no mistake with the empty net finish.

“The team, for some reason, when the pressure gets turned up or someone misses an assignment, they’ll overcompensate and misplay easy clearances or overcover an opposing player,” became the story of the Riveters’ evening—a team talented enough to compete with anyone but lacking the mental fortitude to execute under pressure.

Second Period: More of the Same

The second period followed an eerily similar script, with both teams finding the net while the Riveters continued their march to the penalty box. Montreal’s power-play goal by Downie-Landry at 7:30 came off perhaps the most egregious defensive error of the night—a Riveters defender attempting to handle the puck in the middle of the ice directly in front of her goaltender.

The mistake violated one of hockey’s most fundamental rules, the kind of error that makes coaches question their players’ hockey IQ and decision-making under pressure. The puck slid off the defender’s stick directly to Downie-Landry, who made no mistake from point-blank range.

Sarah Bujold’s response goal at 18:27 provided a glimpse of what the Riveters can accomplish when they execute properly. Kelly Babstock’s veteran presence shone through as she picked the pockets of two Montreal players, creating the turnover that led to Bujold’s wraparound finish over the glove from the goal line.

The goal was Bujold’s fifth of the season and her fifth in the last three games, establishing her as the league’s hottest scorer. But individual brilliance couldn’t mask the systemic issues that continued to plague the team’s overall performance.

Babstock’s Penalty Troubles Mount

Kelly Babstock’s milestone night was marred by penalty troubles that highlighted the fine line between aggressive play and undisciplined hockey. Her two penalties—holding the stick at 7:25 and interference at 14:38—demonstrated the challenge facing a veteran player trying to impact the game while staying within the rules.

The interference call was particularly controversial, with Babstock coming to a full stop and avoiding extending contact. The collision appeared incidental, the kind of play that officials often let slide. But in the context of the Riveters’ penalty troubles, every borderline call seemed to go against them.

The penalties were symptomatic of a larger problem—a team that plays on the edge but lacks the discipline to stay on the right side of that edge when it matters most.

Third Period Collapse: Downie-Landry Takes Over

The final period belonged entirely to Jade Downie-Landry, who completed her historic hat trick with a dominant performance that exposed every Riveter’s weakness. Her first goal of the period at 4:04 came off another Metropolitan turnover at neutral ice, with Downie-Landry capitalizing on the mistake with a short-side finish that beat McQuiggie cleanly.

The goal highlighted the Riveters’ ongoing struggles with puck management and defensive positioning. Simple passes were missing their targets, creating the kind of turnovers that elite players like Downie-Landry punish without mercy.

Ann-Sophie Bettez’s goal at 12:19 extended Montreal’s lead to 4-2, with Kristina Shanahan providing the assist on another clinical finish. The Force was making the most of every opportunity while the Riveters continued to create their problems through poor decision-making.

Downie-Landry’s empty-net goal at 18:21 completed her hat trick and triggered the traditional hat toss from Montreal fans, a celebration that perfectly captured the home team’s dominance. Samantha Isbell’s assist on both of Downie-Landry’s third-period goals demonstrated the kind of chemistry and execution that the Riveters have struggled to find consistently.

Too Little, Too Late: Ganser’s Debut Goal

Kennedy Ganser’s first goal as a Riveter at 18:53 provided a brief moment of celebration in an otherwise disappointing performance. The goal, assisted by Catherine Crawley and Sarah Forster, came from close range and demonstrated the kind of net-front presence that the team needs more consistently.

But the goal was too little, too late—a consolation score that couldn’t mask the systemic failures that had defined the evening. The Riveters pulled their goaltender twice in the final period, but their inability to maintain pressure in the Montreal zone with the extra attacker highlighted their ongoing struggles with execution under pressure.

Coaching Concerns and Accountability

Head coach Venla Hovi’s reputation for accountability was evident throughout the match, but even her demanding standards couldn’t prevent the mental errors that cost her team dearly. The young coach’s willingness to hold players accountable is exactly what this team needs, but the results suggest that the message isn’t translating to on-ice performance when it matters most.

The Riveters’ penalty statistics tell a damning story—16 penalties through their early games, second-worst in the PHF behind only Toronto’s 26. While their penalty kill percentage of 81.3% ranks third in the league, and they lead in short-handed goals with two, the constant parade to the penalty box disrupts rhythm and momentum.

Statistical Breakdown: Numbers Don’t Lie

The shot differential of 16-15 in favor of Montreal represented an improvement for the Riveters, who have struggled with puck possession in recent games. But the quality of chances told a different story, with Montreal converting their opportunities while the Riveters failed to capitalize on theirs.

The penalty statistics paint an even grimmer picture:

  • Toronto Six: 26 penalties
  • Metropolitan Riveters: 16 penalties
  • Boston Pride and Montreal Force: 13 penalties each
  • Minnesota: 10 penalties
  • Connecticut Whale: 5 penalties
  • Buffalo Beauts: 4 penalties

The Riveters’ position near the top of this list reflects a fundamental problem with discipline that threatens to derail their season if not addressed immediately.

Montreal’s Le Tour de Force: Perfect Home Debut

Montreal’s victory was made even more special by the context—their first game at a home rink as part of their innovative Le Tour de Force initiative. The Force will play at various arenas throughout Quebec province this season, showcasing professional women’s hockey across the region in celebration of their inaugural PHF campaign.

The upcoming schedule includes games at:

  • Centre 21.02 (Verdun Auditorium)
  • Aréna Raymond-Bourque (Montreal)
  • Aréna Conrad-Parent in Sept-ÃŽles (December 3-4 vs Connecticut)
  • Colisée Financière Sun Life in Rimouski (January 7-8 vs Toronto)
  • Centre Premier Tech in Rivière-du-Loup (January 21-22 vs Boston)
  • Aréna régional de la Rivière-du-Nord in Saint-Jérôme (February 4-5 vs Minnesota)
  • Pavillon de la jeunesse in Québec (February 25-26 vs Buffalo)

The initiative represents exactly the kind of community engagement that professional women’s hockey needs to grow, and Montreal’s dominant performance provided the perfect showcase for their home province fans.

Looking Ahead: Urgent Need for Improvement

The Riveters face an immediate test of character as they prepare for their next matchup in yet another new arena. The team’s first two-game losing streak of the season comes at a critical juncture, with discipline and defensive positioning emerging as urgent areas for improvement.

Coach Hovi’s challenge is clear: transform a talented but undisciplined group into a team capable of executing under pressure. The individual pieces are in place—Bujold’s scoring touch, Babstock’s veteran leadership, and international talent throughout the lineup—but the collective execution remains inconsistent.

The penalty troubles must be addressed immediately. While the Riveters’ penalty kill has been effective and they lead the league in short-handed goals, the constant disruption to game flow prevents them from establishing the kind of sustained pressure that their talent level should produce.

Defensive Fundamentals: Back to Basics

The defensive breakdowns that led to Montreal’s goals were particularly concerning because they violated basic hockey principles. Attempting to handle the puck in front of your own goaltender, failing to protect neutral ice turnovers, and poor rebound control are fundamental errors that championship teams simply cannot afford.

The Riveters’ defensive structure needs immediate attention, with particular focus on:

  • Puck management in defensive zones
  • Communication and coverage assignments
  • Neutral zone positioning and gap control
  • Rebound control and second-chance prevention

Offensive Potential Remains Bright

Despite the disappointing result, the Riveters showed flashes of the offensive potential that makes them dangerous when executing properly. Bujold’s continued scoring surge, Babstock’s playmaking ability, and the international talent throughout the lineup provide reason for optimism.

The key is translating individual brilliance into consistent team performance. The Riveters have the talent to compete with anyone in the PHF, but talent alone isn’t enough without the discipline and execution that define championship teams.

The Path Forward: Character Test

The Riveters’ response to this setback will define their season. Teams with championship aspirations learn from defeats like this, using the pain of self-inflicted losses as motivation for fundamental improvement.

Coach Hovi’s demanding standards and accountability-focused approach provide the foundation for improvement, but the players must translate that coaching into on-ice execution. The talent is undeniable, but talent without discipline is merely potential unfulfilled.

The next game represents an immediate opportunity for redemption. Can the Riveters learn from their mistakes and execute the kind of disciplined, fundamental hockey that their talent level demands? Or will they continue the cycle of self-destruction that has defined their recent performances?

The answer will determine whether this talented group fulfills its potential or becomes another cautionary tale of talent wasted through poor execution and mental mistakes.

The Riveters’ season hangs in the balance. It’s time to prove they’re more than just a collection of talented individuals—it’s time to prove they’re a team.
