Bath Beach, Brooklyn, NY- A quiet Friday evening routine turned into a devastating tragedy for a local Brooklyn community. Katie Suarez, a 28-year-old resident and local bank employee, has been officially declared brain dead following a brutal, unprovoked assault while jogging along a waterfront bike path in the Bath Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn.
The incident has triggered an intensive investigation by the New York City Police Department as authorities launch a massive manhunt for suspects and search for a potential motive. The random and savage nature of the attack has sent shockwaves through local running clubs, cycling groups, and neighborhood residents who frequently utilize the heavily trafficked shoreline recreation corridor.
The Anatomy of the Attack
The assault transpired at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Friday night, October 30, along the Shore Parkway Greenway, a scenic bike and pedestrian trail running adjacent to the Belt Parkway. According to law enforcement sources, Suarez was out for a routine evening jog, actively preparing and training for the upcoming New York City Marathon.
Suarez was running alone near the intersection of Bay 17th Street and Cropsey Avenue when an unidentified assailant approached her. The attacker delivered multiple critical, severe stab wounds directly to her neck.
Suarez had planned to meet up with her family immediately following her run. When she failed to arrive or respond to communication, her father grew deeply alarmed, left to retrace her route, and discovered her gravely injured and collapsed in the grass along the path. Investigators later confirmed that a large, harrowing trail of blood led from the paved bike path to the grass shoulder where she was found.
Emergency medical services rushed Suarez to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn in critical condition, where she underwent emergency trauma surgery. Despite aggressive interventions by medical teams, professionals later confirmed that the severe oxygen deprivation and trauma sustained during the assault resulted in irreversible brain death.
Intensive Manhunt and Evidence Gathering
The attack prompted a massive, multi-agency police response throughout the weekend. Detectives closed down sections of the waterfront path, deploying specialized NYPD units—including aviation, K-9 teams, and drone units—to scan the coastline and surrounding brush. Forensic Crime Scene Unit technicians combed through the tall grass under heavy spotlight illumination, while marine units searched the nearby waters for weapons or discarded physical evidence.
As investigators work to piece together a definitive timeline, the NYPD has acknowledged a significant hurdle: the attack took place on an isolated stretch of the greenway that completely lacks municipal security cameras, complicating initial tracking efforts. As of Sunday, no suspects have been detained, and authorities have not yet released a physical description of the assailant.
Infrastructure and Safety Demands Take Center Stage
The tragedy has thrust localized security vulnerabilities into the political spotlight, sparking widespread anxiety among community members. “It’s scary. But, I mean, I always try to run. Never alone, always with someone,” local runner Gabby Garcia stated after being stopped by police checkpoints blocking access to the trail on Saturday.
State Senator Steven Chen, a retired police sergeant representing the district, visited the active crime scene to address growing community panic and demand immediate municipal upgrades to the infrastructure.
“The drivers on the highway really couldn’t see what was happening because of this barrier right here,” Senator Chen observed during a public address at the site. “And we need lighting. It’s dark out here at night. We all know that; all the neighbors know that… I need more lights. I need more lights down here.”
In addition to upgraded illumination along the dark expanses of the Shore Parkway path, local representatives and residents are urging the Department of Parks and Recreation to immediately clear overgrown brush and trim high grass that could provide concealment for bad actors.
Police Appeal for Information
The NYPD has posted wanted notices throughout the Bath Beach and Bay Ridge neighborhoods, though no photograph or composite sketch of the suspected attacker is currently available.
Authorities are urgently appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who was driving along the Belt Parkway or utilizing the bike path between 8:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Friday night is asked to come forward. Investigators are specifically searching for dashcam footage, local residential security recordings, or eyewitness accounts that could help identify the suspect.
Anyone with information that could assist investigators is requested to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Tips can also be submitted confidentially online via the NYPD Crime Stoppers website.
