Red Bull New York traveled up north to face the New England Revolution in a crucial game to stay in the playoffs. It was a tough battle against their Eastern Conference rivals as they went behind early in the first half and at the start of the second half. Yet they made a bid for a comeback and were able to level the match, then made an attempt to push for the third goal. But once again, at the most difficult venue for the club, they lost it all late and fell by the final score of three goals to two.
Turgeman scored a brace
Israeli international striker Dor Turgeman took advantage of some poor defensive play and was able to get the Revolution on the board early and added a two-goal lead at the start of the second half. The first goal came when Tim Parker made a bad pass that was intercepted, and the Revolution started their attacking run. As the Revs were hovering around the area, the ball was passed around, and the Red Bulls were defending pretty well, until the pass from Carles Gil found Turgeman just outside the top of the area and unleashed a big shot that Ethan Horvath wasn’t able to save, and scored in the 9th minute.
Michael Bradley made a substitution at halftime when he took out Tim Parker and put in Matthew Dos Santos, as Devin Padelford became the center back and Dos Santos was in his comfortable left fullback position. When the whistle blew to start the second half, the Red Bulls didn’t hear it, as they were scored on right away. A fabulous pass from Luca Langoni from the far side froze the backline, allowing Turgeman to break through and smash one in for the two-goal lead in the 46th minute. A slow start for the Red Bulls, but they did pick up the pace later on.
Cowell fights back and does it himself
The Red Bulls knew their backs were firmly against the wall, and they needed to get themselves back into the match. It all started from the far side as Adri Mehmeti gave the ball to Ronald Donkor. It was a long cross to the near side, where Cade Cowell was waiting for the ball and received it, then made a move to go forward. As he was stopped near the area, Cowell decided to back up a step, then made a quick turn and took the shot. As the ball was bending towards the net, it his the side netting inside the far post as he pulled one back in the 51st minute.
Magic flick and a chip
The Red Bulls were now on a mission to get that second goal and make the game interesting. They just pushed it and looked dangerous. Emil Forsberg subbed into the match after Cowell’s goal was scored and quickly made things happen. Mehmeti once again started the play as he tried to get a through ball to Forsberg. While he did receive the ball, Forsberg gave it a bit of a flick to Julian Hall, who was in an onside position and made the attacking run. When he entered the area, Hall chipped the ball, and it bent towards the back post, and he beat Matt Turner for the equalizer in the 64th minute.
Rebound poked home and done
The Red Bulls tried to get that third goal to take the lead, but nothing came. The Revolution were finally starting to get back into the match and had that one magical attacking run that gave them the lead again. As the play was going down the near side, the Revs were looking for the right time to take the shot. When Peyton Miller received the ball inside the area, he unleashed a hard shot that was stopped by Ethan Horvath, but he couldn’t hold on to it as the rebound spilled out. That’s when Daniel Gazdag quickly reacted, beat Padelford to the ball, and smashed it home in the 83rd minute to secure the full three points.
“It’s a night where a lot of things repeat themselves that have come up over the course of the season. You know, we give away an early goal. A little bit out of nothing, whereas the game is still settling in, they [New England] are able to make a little bit of a play and make it a shot from outside the box. So, we go down to one-zero. The rest of the first half we push, and generally for me we are the team with the upper hand. We have some good chances, some good advantages.
Can’t get back to one-one. Talk about a few things at halftime, and then right away after coming out of halftime, we concede the second. And then we fight back in a really good way. Score two really good goals. Get back to two-two. At two-two, we have some big chances to score the third and then can’t deal with a play in our box, and they’re able to get to three-two. So yeah, it’s a frustrating one tonight,” said Michael Bradley
Playoff positioning
With other scores coming to a close. Toronto FC defeated D.C. United 2-1; the Columbus Crew away at FC Dallas won the match 2-0. That means the Crew is in the final playoff spot with a two-point advantage, while the Red Bulls are back below the playoff line in 10th place and tied with 39 points with Toronto, and have the tiebreaker with two wins more than the Canadian Club. With two more matches remaining away at Nashville and Decision Day at home against Atlanta United, the position that the Red Bulls are now in is looking grim. Now with both Ronald Donkor and Dylan Nealis suspended for Yellow card Accumulation, they will have Julian Bazan back on the backline this Sunday late afternoon. But they will need a lot of help to climb back into the final playoff position if they do get back over.
