Today, the Soccer Confederations of Asia (AFC), Europe (UEFA) & the Confederation of North America, Central America & Caribbean Football (CONCACAF) sent a joint letter to all the fans of the game and the media on their stance against Gianni Infantino and how he has run FIFA as President of the governing body of Football. They have outlined their concerns and their anger towards the shortened timeline of passing their FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal (FFE), even though they pulled the proposal and went on an apology tour. But many feel he has overstepped his bounds, and the majority from these three confederations have said they want Infantino out now.
The letter and its contents
The letter was approved by the three Confederations presidents: AFC President Salman Bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani, and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, and their General Secretaries in AFC’s Datuk Seri Windsor John, CONCACAF’s Philippe Moggio, and UEFA’s Theodore Theodoridis put their signatures at the end of the letter to make sure these three are on the same page going against the actions of Infantino.
The way Infantino governed the game
Since taking over for Sepp Blatter as President of FIFA, there have been a few concerns about how he has governed the game. How the next two World Cups were awarded to giving President Donald Trump the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize at the 2026 World Cup Draw at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to the suspension of the one-match ban to Folarin Balogun’s red card came to be, and now the FFE Proposal that has been pulled from the table for voting with a shortened timeline and many more issues coming around. While we haven’t heard of a new candidate or two stepping up to make a challenge for the upcoming FIFA Congress to have an election, there have been calls for Infantino to step down.
Right now, Infantino has apologized profusely and is still gaining support from Africa (CAF), South America (CONMEBOL), and the South Pacific Islands (OCEANIA). While CONCACAF as a whole has gone against FIFA, there are reports that the FMF in Mexico is leaning towards Infantino and showing him support. But at the end of the day, something must be done. The next step for the current FIFA President is to either step down on his own, as many hope, run for re-election, or lose his position to an opposing candidate. This battle isn’t over.
