Two big European teams are looking for their chance to make a big move into the semi-finals: Norway, in their second World Cup appearance, and England, which hasn’t reached the next level since the 2018 World Cup in Russia. This was the battle of the old guard against the up-and-coming side from Scandinavia. This match was a tough affair, as it needed extra time to get it settled. But after the final whistle blew, it was The Three Lions that roared to the Semi-Finals as they defeated Norway by a final score of two goals to one in Extra Time.
Jude Bellingham’s two goals were the difference
Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane have been excellent for England, converting most of the goals to put their team ahead and advancing in the knockout stage. His two goals put England in a position of confidence and showed they want to take home that little golden trophy back for the first time since 1966. His first goal came with some controversy as the officials on the pitch and the VAR room missed a key moment before scoring the first goal.
Elliott Anderson attacked with the ball down the near side touchline and made the pass to Anthony Gordon. When Gordon got close to the area, he made the low cross, and trailing was Bellingham. He just shot the ball past the defender and in the back of the net in the 2nd minute of four in first half stoppage time. But before the ball reached Anderson, there was outrage from Norway’s head coach, Ståle Solbakken. When the ball was played and went high into the air, it struck the cable that helps the Sky Cam go back and forth. When that happens, the officials must blow the whistle and halt play. Neither the on-field officials nor the VAR room spotted it, and the goal stood for England.
On the second goal for Bellingham, England was looking very hard for the go-ahead goal at the start of extra time. The ball was deep inside the Norway end and was passed around along the near side. When they got the ball towards Morgan Rogers, he unleashed a huge shot that forced the save by Ørjan Nyland, but it was hit so hard Nyland left a juicy rebound to get picked up. It was Bellingham that hustled to the ball and scored the match winner in the 93rd minute to give England the lead and put their fans in a frenzy.
Amazing goal from the young Norwegian
It was a fabulous goal scored by Andres Schjelderup when he struck it from such a long distance at the far side of the pitch. It all started with a challenge from Patrick Berg, who looked like he fouled Harry Kane from behind, but actually got a touch of the ball, and Martin Ødegaard recovered it. As Ødegaard had possession, he moved it down the pitch and then made the quick pass to Schjelderup at the far side. He unleashed such a shot that it hit the inside of the back post and bounced in. He stood there, extending his arms to the Norwegian fans in celebration in the 36th minute.
Norway had lost the lead on a VAR review
It looked like Norway got the lead early in the second half from a corner, and it was scored on a rebound chance, but VAR called the referee over and showed on the monitor that before the ball was put back into play, a foul was missed. Erling Haaland was battling with an England defender and then shoved his man down with two hands to get free. The referee went to the monitor and saw it, then announced it was removed, and the corner kick would be retaken. Norway retook the corner and couldn’t convert that time, but a bad moment for their top goalscorer.
And now England will await the end of the Argentina/Switzerland match to see who they will face in the Semi-Finals on Wednesday, July 15th, as we are nearing the end of this World Cup and hope that we will have an amazing finish on Sunday, July 19th.
England needed extra Time to defeat Norway and advance to the Semi-Finals.
