Cabo Verde Holds Off Spain, Earns First Point in the World Cup

One of the rarest of nations on the African continent, Cabo Verde, finally qualified for the FIFA World Cup and had the daunting task of taking on a World Cup champion in Spain when they were drawn in Group H back in December in the capital of the United States of America. This was a match where David truly found a way to keep Goliath off the scoreboard and battled hard all match long. When the final whistle sounded, Cabo Verde earned their first point in the World Cup with a scoreless draw against Spain.

From the opening whistle, Spain was on the attack and never relented. They had possession for the majority of the match as they tried to break down Cabo Verde’s bunker defense. But the most important player on Cabo Verde was their 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha, making amazing saves and still hustling inside his area to get into great positioning to make those saves and keeping the opposition off the scoreboard.

The big moment from Vozinha came from two consecutive shots in the 39th minute as Spain came knocking on the door. Ferran Torres received a cross from Marc Cucurella and took a shot that hit the front of the crossbar and back to the six-yard box, but it was loose, and Mikel Oyarzabal quickly came in and headed the ball towards the net, forcing Yozinha to make a leaping left-handed parry save over the bar and conceding a corner.

In the final minute of regulation in the first half before stoppage time, Torres had another chance to get a goal. He was just inside the top of the area when he unleashed a huge shot going right at the net, when Yozinha came up with a big grab and made the save. After the referee blew his whistle for halftime, you had the feeling this could be a long afternoon for Spain and a workmanlike performance for Cabo Verde, as this match felt like survival was important for either side.

When the second half came, you saw Spain once again making attacking runs and attempting to pierce the back of the net and take dominance in the match. Cabo Verde wanted to shock the world and show them they can hold off on one of the giants in European Football. Fabian Ruiz was in a perfect position to accept a cross from the far side and got a free header at the net, but once again, Yozinha was there to make the save. Then the substitution for Spain came for FC Barcelona’s young star, Lamine Yamal subbed into the match in the 71st minute.

The Spaniards continued to attack and attack, but nothing was converted. For Cabo Verde, they finally earned their first corner of the match in the 90th minute. When the ball was crossed and headed down at the net, Unai Simon made the easy grab and got his teammates to push up the pitch. Then the fourth official posted five minutes of second half stoppage time, the European Champions tried to score that magical goal, but it never came. On the last play of the match, Spain earned a corner and delivered it towards the area, but it went across to no one and out.

After five minutes had been added on, the referee blew his whistle, and the African country of Cabo Verde earned their first ever point in the World Cup. The scenes at the bench of Cabo Verde and the players were celebrating while Spain looked at themselves and questioned what went wrong. Both coaches, Spain’s Luis de la Fuente Castillo and Cabo Verde’s Pedro Leitão Brito, met in the middle of the pitch and exchanged a congratulatory hug and had a quick conversation. But on this day, it was Cabo Verde as their fans and citizens celebrated throughout the night and got rewarded for their performance.
