A Sun‑Soaked Opener Turns Tense as Canada Salvage a Draw

TORONTO — Under a bright mid‑afternoon sun and a stadium already humming long before the 3 p.m. kickoff, Canada’s long‑awaited home World Cup debut delivered everything except the result they needed. A 1–1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Stadium gave the co-hosts their first-ever World Cup point—but also left them staring at a far more complicated Group B path than expected.

“We felt like we had them, still frustrated by a sluggish opening half. The first half wasn’t aggressive enough. The second half was different, but we have to learn from today.”

Head Coach Jesse Marsch, Canada Men’s National Team

The crowd of more than 45,000 roared Canada forward all afternoon. The finishing touch never arrived.

Bosnia Strike First as Canada Start Flat

Set‑Piece Breakdown Puts Hosts Behind Early

Canada’s nerves showed early, and Bosnia punished them with ruthless simplicity. In the 21st minute, Sead Kolašinac flicked on a near‑post corner, and Jovo Lukić nodded in from point‑blank range—a goal that came straight out of the “avoid at all costs” section of Canada’s scouting report. “Kolasinac flicks the delivery… for Lukic to nod in on the line!”

It was a soft concession, and it forced Canada into chase mode under the afternoon heat in Toronto with a stadium full of supporters.

Bosnia nearly doubled the lead minutes later when Amar Memić blasted one over the crossbar from inside the area, another warning sign for a Canadian backline that looked rattled in the opening half-hour.

Canada Grows Into the Match but Waste Big Chances

Oluwaseyi, David and Laryea All Miss Key Moments

Once Canada settled, they began carving out chances—and wasting them.

Tani Oluwaseyi, the Villarreal CF forward whose rise from St. John’s University to Minnesota United and now La Liga has made him one of the most intriguing young attackers in CONCACAF, was at the center of Canada’s early push. His movement troubled Bosnia’s back line all afternoon, and he created Canada’s first real opening when he muscled past Tarik Muharemović and lashed a left‑footed effort over the bar from 12 yards. “He should really at least work the goalkeeper.”

It was the kind of moment that showed both Oluwaseyi’s raw power and the inexperience that still creeps into his game—a reminder that while he’s blossomed in Spain, the World Cup demands a different level of precision.

Jonathan David followed with a low shot that Nikola Vasilj handled comfortably, and Canada’s frustration grew as chance after chance fizzled out. By halftime, they had eight shots but only one on target.

The second half opened with Canada surging forward. Oluwaseyi nearly equalized with a driven cross that forced Vasilj into a strong palm save. Moments later, Richie Laryea looked certain to score before Kolašinac made a stunning clearance off the crossbar. “You cannot get any closer than that!”

At the other end, Maxime Crépeau kept Canada alive with a crucial one‑on‑one stop on Ermedin Demirović.

Larin Changes Everything

Impact Sub Turns the Match in Two Minutes

Jesse Marsch turned to his bench early, and the match shifted. But it was the 76th‑minute introduction of Cyle Larin that changed everything.

Just 121 seconds after stepping onto the pitch, Larin spun sharply inside the box and buried the equalizer after Promise David slipped him through. “David plays a wonderful around‑the‑corner pass to Larin, who overpowers his marker and drives home.”

“It was special for me,” Larin said. “I was ready to come in and help the team. I score when Canada needs me—I always have.”

Larin nearly won it in stoppage time, denied only by a desperate sliding block from Muharemović. “GREAT BLOCK/SAVE!”

Canada earned their first World Cup point. They also learned how quickly a match can slip away at this level.

Key stat: Canada ended a six‑match World Cup finals losing streak.

Canada’s first home World Cup match delivered noise, nerves, and a point—but not the statement they needed. The performance showed resilience; the finishing showed why this group remains unpredictable. With Qatar next, the margin for error shrinks fast.
