Knicks Takes Series Back Home Leading 2-0

The New York Knicks went back to the Frost Bank Center to take the advantage to two games to nothing on the San Antonio Spurs. The game was exciting to watch as both teams gave it their all from the start to the bitter end, and when it came down to being on the free throw line, and the final shot of the night, it was the Knicks who came up huge and just held on for the win as they edged the Spurs by the final score of 105 – 104 officially making it 13 straight playoff wins, and now the series heads to Madison Square Garden.

The Spurs began with the lead from the opening tip until halftime, but all of a sudden, the Knicks took the lead at the buzzer. They started strong and kept the lead until the final two minutes of the fourth quarter, and the Spurs came back to force a tied game, until Brunson was at the free-throw line, hitting one of two, and the Spurs had the last shot of the game, which was missed, and the Knicks survived. Victor Wembanyama led all scorers with 29 points, and De’Aaron Fox was second with 20 points. Karl Anthony Towns led the Knicks with another double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson tied for second on the Knicks with 20 points each, and Landry Shamet led the Knicks’ bench with 13 points.

First Half: Spurs lead the entire half till the end

The Spurs got off to a strong start, and the Knicks stayed right with them. While the lead was at single digits, the Spurs still found ways to stay ahead of the Knicks. Mitchell Robinson was getting fouled when the Knicks were in the penalty, as he made three out of six free throws, including going two for two on his last trip to the line. As the second quarter began, the Knicks started to turn it on, and Towns was cooking. He hit three consecutive shots, converted a three-pointer, and then he jammed one down in front of Wembanyama. As the quarter continued, all of a sudden, the officiating started to go against the Knicks.

A moment when De’Aaron Fox dribbled the ball up the court, his progress was stopped, started to circle keeping his right foot as his pivot foot to attempt to clear away the Knicks defenders, then, picked up his dribble again and was given the bucket, and was fouled to go to the line. The Crew Chief Tony Brothers allowed the bucket to stand when he or his other two officials should’ve called for a double dribble as his progress was stopped, and he never had the ball swiped out of his hands to allow him to dribble the ball again. During a tussle under the basket between Robinson and Wembanyama, both men were grabbing and shoving each other. The officials called for a technical, and only gave it to Robinson, allowing Wembanyama to go unpunished.

Then the Knicks started to cut the deficit as Bridges started to cook and drained a couple of three pointers, and Shamet was also involved to secure a few baskets of his own and a layup. The Knicks, towards the end of the first half, pulled away and secured a four-point lead to head back into the locker room. After going down by 12 points, the Knicks started to find their footing and took their first lead of the night.

Obviously, they made their run towards the end. And, you know, we could have folded. A few times. But our guys just kept fighting. It kept fighting. And the one thing I told them that. You work on connectivity throughout the course of the year. For moments like these.

And no matter what run they went on, no matter at what time of the game. Our guys just kept uplifting one another. Not just the guys on the floor, but the guys on the bench. They just kept uplifting one another throughout the course of San Antonio’s runs. So that connectivity that we started with, had during the season and continue to have now, paid huge dividends for our group,” Said Mike Brown

Second Half: The Knicks led till the final moments at the end

When the third quarter began, the Knicks caught the Spurs sleeping and quickly extended their lead to ten points by hitting two three-pointers from O.G. Anunoby and Jalen Brunson. Once the Spurs’ timeout was called, they came back into the game. But once again, when the officials saw the Knicks extend their lead, they called phantom fouls on Josh Hart and gave him four personals, while they tagged Towns and gave him two quick fouls, giving him four personals. Both were subbed out, and coming on from the bench were Shamet, Deuce McBride, and Jose Alvarado, who picked up the slack along with Bridges as he exploded for 20 points in this game. Especially a huge alley oop jam by Robinson from Bridges with his broken pinky finger on his right hand that has a special cover on it.

While the Spurs did create several runs, like a 7-0 run early in the fourth to cut the deficit, the Knicks continued to extend their lead. They had a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. As Anunoby was able to jam one down in front of Wembanyama, and he stole a pass and found Brunson, who made the full-court pull-up floater, but as the game went toward the final 2:30, the Knicks started to miss some shots, including Brunson, which allowed the Spurs to go on a 14-0 run. Anunoby claimed he was fouled, but was called for throwing the ball away. He was saved by a coach’s challenge that gave him three free throws, and he converted all of them.

The Spurs found new energy and continued to harass the Knicks on offense, while the visitors kept missing shots. But within the final 7.5 seconds of the game, Brunson was fouled during the penalty and went to the line for two. He converted the first one that gave the Knicks a one-point lead, but missed the second one, and the Spurs quickly called their last timeout to form a play. Once the Spurs inbounded the ball and found Wembanyama behind the three-point line, his shot hit the back of the hoop and fell away, giving the Knicks the win and extending their series lead. For the first time in these playoffs, the Spurs have lost back-to-back games. While the Knicks join the 2016-17 Golden State Warriors for 13 consecutive Playoff Victories. They are also the third team to win two consecutive road playoff games, tying the 1993 Chicago Bulls and the 1995 Houston Rockets.

UPDATE: The NBA has officially rescinded Mitchell Robinson’s Technical Foul on his Tussell against Victory Wambanyama in the second quarter. Both men were shoving each other as Robinson was the only one to get the technical, while Wembanyama got away with nothing.
