The Philadelphia Union and former Head Coach Bradley Carnell have parted ways during the World Cup break, as the club is currently last in the Eastern Conference with 7 points. In 15 matches, the Union has a record of one win, four draws, and ten losses, after winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield last season and advancing to the U.S. Open Cup Semifinals. He also won the MLS Coach of the Year award last year as well. Carnell did the same thing for St. Louis City SC back in their inaugural season in 2023, then the following year, he had a horrible start and was fired after the first two to three months of that season.
“On behalf of the Philadelphia Union organization, I want to thank Bradley for his dedication and commitment to the club during his time here,” said Jay Sugarman, Philadelphia’s principal owner.
“He brought professionalism and passion to his role, and we appreciate everything he has contributed to the team and the organization. We are confident that he will find success in his future coaching endeavors.”
Bradley Carnell is the seventh head coach in MLS to get fired this season. Oscar Pareja left Orlando City on March 11th, then Marco Donadel was fired by CF Montreal on April 12th, then Javier Mascherano left Inter Miami on April 14th, Henrik Rydstrom was fired by the Columbus Crew on May 17th, and finally, Nico Estevez was fired by Austin FC on May 18th.
Taking over as interim head coach is Union II’s head coach, Ryan Richter. He was a member of Jim Curtin’s staff as an assistant from 2022 to 2024, then went to Union II of MLS Next Pro in 2025. The Union has also hired a new Sporting Director, John Scheer. He will manage all sporting operations for the club, including player recruitment, roster management, scouting, and he will also help give the Union his thoughts and support the long-term goals and competitive vision across all levels for the club.
