The club from the five boroughs made the trip to Eastern Westchester County, in Mount Vernon, to face Westchester SC of USL League One in the U.S. Open Cup. A full stadium at Memorial Field had a giant visiting support for the Dark Blue side as they came to show everyone who was the dominant New York side, either the city or the state. It was a masterclass destruction from the blue city boys as they took out the club that represents the first county north of the five boroughs, as NYCFC defeated Westchester FC, Five Goals to two.
Game Recap
Talles Magno came in red hot to start the match. After Daniel Burko found an equalizer in the 22nd minute, Magno was attacking with the ball and was taken down inside the penalty area, and the referee blew his whistle and pointed to the spot for a penalty. Magno took the spot kick and drilled it in to retake the lead in the 24th minute. His second goal came when Agustin Ojeda attacked down the near side, saw Magno making a run down the middle. Crossed the ball, and Magno just gets his right boot on it and scored in the 36th minute.
The third and final goal came in the 70th minute after the Westchester keeper made the initial stop, but the rebound was taken by City. They reset the play, and a long cross to the near post saw Magno leap up and head the ball across and inside the far post to complete the hat-trick. This was a big game for Magno, who needed a performance like this after the club’s loss in league play to the Vancouver Whitecaps.
NYCFC’s first goal of the match came from Ojeda as he received the ball in the middle of the pitch and made a run down to the Westchester net. When he got close a quick pass to the near side toward Seymore Reid, who gave it back to Ojeda, then took the shot to beat the keeper in the 13th minute. The fourth goal of the match came late in the first half when City moved the ball down the near side. As Ojeda looked to get another one, the ball was crossed to the far side. Trailing the play was Arnau Farnos as he got the ball and ripped a hard shot into the upper far 90 in the 41st minute.
“We spoke about three controllables. There was attitude, opportunity, and intensity. And we know with a better team on the pitch, we have to do it. Every time you concede, or you play a bad game against a team like this, from this level, they’ll get it back to you. So those three controllables were our priority. And today was, was, okay. It’s the shortest way to silverware. So for us it’s important, even though we knew it was a different level than Pittsburgh, but also the first game in the Cup, to get a good start and make sure we continue this run within this tournament,” said Pascal Jansen
Now, NYCFC will await the winner of the Red Bull New York/Pittsburgh Riverhounds Open Cup match to see which destination they have to travel to. Either a quick trip over the Hudson River or a return to Western Pennsylvania.
