After 19 seasons in the National Hockey League, Jonathan Quick has finally ended his chapter as a professional goaltender at the age of 40. The backup to Igor Shesterkin for the past three seasons at the New York Rangers, but started his career with the Los Angeles Kings, and was traded in the middle of the 2022-23 season to the Vegas Golden Knights. Winning three Stanley Cup Championships in 2012, 2014, with the Kings and with Vegas in 2023. He has left a long legacy and will be destined for the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Jonathan Quick and the Kings
His NHL Career began in the 2005 NHL Draft as he was selected 72nd overall by the Los Angeles Kings. He started with the Kings’ ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals, in the 2006-07 season, then moved up to the Kings’ AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, in the 2008-09 season. The Kings called him up due to Erik Ersberg’s injury on December 16th, 2008, and the rest is history. Defeated the Devils in the 2012 Stanley Cup Final, Then the Rangers in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final. Played 16 seasons in Los Angeles before he was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights.
Short Stint to the Golden Knights
Traded in the middle of the 2022-23 season to the Vegas Golden Knights and played ten games in the regular season. He was the backup goalie as the team skated in the 2023 Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers. He won his third Stanley Cup Championship as they won it in five games.
Coming home to play for the Rangers
A native of Milford, Connecticut, and grew up as a New York Rangers Fan, Quick idolized former Ranger and Stanley Cup Champion Mike Richter. He signed one-year deals for the last three seasons to back up Igor Shesterkin. In his first season with the Rangers in the 2023-24 season at the Arizona Coyotes, Quick achieved 400 career wins and became the winningest American Goaltender in NHL History with 410 career wins. Carried the Rangers during a stretch of games when Shesterkin was injured early in the 2023-24 season. Quick’s final game will be at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, where the Rangers will face the Florida Panthers.
He was a hard-working and athletic goaltender who prided himself on making sure he stopped the puck at every opportunity he got. A fierce competitor and was loved inside the locker room. For sure, he will be heading for the Hockey Hall of Fame when his eligability will be coming up, and he will have his #32 retired by the Kings. But for Rangers fans, he will be remembered for his passion to play for his hometown hockey team, and he showed pride in wearing the Broadway Blueshirt.
