A big opening round of UEFA World Cup Qualifying Playoffs began for Italy as they hosted Northern Ireland at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia. For two consecutive cycles, the Azurri have failed to qualify for the World Cup, and it has put a strain on the hearts and minds of all Italians, hoping to finally see their National team back on the World Stage and travel to North America, as the first stage is complete, defeating Northern Ireland by a final score of two goals to nil.
Game Recap
After a scoreless first half, both sides were looking to regroup a bit and hopefully find a way to end the deadlock when the restart came. It finally happened for Italy when they attacked the Northern Ireland end. The ball was played along the far side of the pitch and was crossed inside the area. While the defender did block the ball, he left a juicy rebound toward the path of Sandro Tonali, and he smashed it hard inside the far post in the 56th minute
Italy took a two-goal lead late in the second half as they brought the ball up the pitch once again. This time, Tonali was the provider when he was on the near side of the pitch, with the ball. He gave a looping cross toward Moise Kean at the far side and inside the area. He settled the ball, made a juking move toward his left, and took the shot. The ball hits the inside of the back post and ricochets over the goal line in the 80th minute to cement the victory, as Italy will now face Bosnia & Herzegovina for one of four final spots to qualify for the World Cup on Tuesday, March 31st.
