Long Island University announced a $3 million campaign to upgrade the Northwell Health Ice Center. The goal is to expand seating, improve fan experience, and elevate the arena into a premier Division I hockey venue. The project aims to support both the men’s and women’s programs as they continue to grow.
A Push to Modernize LIU’s Home Arena
The Northwell Health Ice Center seats 2,500 fans and already features modern locker rooms, team lounges, coaches’ offices, a fan shop, and full Shark Nation branding. However, LIU believes the time has come to take the next step.
At noon, the university launched a fundraiser to support major improvements. The upgrades are designed to strengthen the atmosphere, increase capacity, and create a true Division I game‑day environment.
“We have seen tremendous growth and interest in our programs,” said LIU Director of Athletics Elliott Charles. “This campaign will harness that momentum and propel LIU Hockey into its next chapter.”
What the $3 Million Campaign Covers
The planned upgrades include:
- Expanded seating
- A new center‑ice Jumbotron
- Improved lighting
- Enhanced sound systems
- A stronger game‑day presentation
In addition, LIU emphasized that these improvements reinforce its partnership with the Northwell Health Ice Center. Both sides share a commitment to building a top‑tier home for NCAA Division I hockey. Coaches Endorse the Vision
Both head coaches expressed strong support for the campaign.

Women’s head coach Kelly Nash said: “Northwell Health Ice Center has been an outstanding home for our student‑athletes. This campaign is about taking the next step and creating a game‑day experience that matches the pride and momentum of our championship program.”

Men’s head coach Brendan Riley added: “We have built something special at LIU. These enhancements will elevate the atmosphere, strengthen home‑ice advantage, and deliver the kind of game day our players and fans deserve.”
A Facility Built for the Future
The upgrades signal LIU’s long‑term commitment to hockey excellence. As a result, the improvements should boost recruiting, increase fan engagement, and strengthen home‑ice identity for both programs.
