Gow’s invention is a self-contained, portable “cyber sandbox.” It solves a problem he has seen throughout his career. Specifically, he noticed a lack of flexible, safe spaces for Airmen to experiment with new threats.

He noted that traditional cyber ranges often require significant infrastructure. These labs also need slow formal approval processes. These hurdles create delays that limit innovation. “The ACTE was developed to combat these problems,” Gow said.

The Future Roadmap for the Agile Cyber Training Environment

For Gow, the success of the ACTE is not just about winning competitions. It is about shrinking the “tool-validation cycle.” Adversaries update malware and attack techniques at a rapid pace today. Therefore, the ability to prototype defensive solutions in a safe, isolated environment is a strategic necessity.

His third-generation prototype has already proven its worth. It has been tested in joint-force exercises and incident response training. It has even processed drone images using advanced photogrammetry.

“The Agile Cyber Training Environment was designed by an Airman, for Airmen,” Gow said. “This platform provides an environment to test, train, and develop at the squadron level.”
