Navy Holds Off Furious Army Rally to Secure 54-51 Win at West Point
West Point, NY (February 21, 2026)– The echoes of tradition and rivalry filled Christl Arena as Army and Navy renewed their storied women’s basketball battle, one that stretches back generations and never fails to deliver drama. The stands were packed with the Corps of Cadets, the Army pep band, proud alumni, and even a few vocal Navy supporters who made the journey. From the moment “Tsunami” blared over the speakers, the atmosphere was electric and the tone unmistakable: this was more than a game.
First Quarter: Army Sets the Tone
The Black Knights came out with intent, attacking early and often. The crowd erupted as Army doubled up Navy, leading 14-7 with just over a minute left in the opening quarter. Brooke Wilson ignited the Army offense, leading all scorers with 5 quick points. Reganne Reardon closed the quarter with a spinning jumper down low, but Navy answered just before the buzzer. After one, Army held a 16-9 advantage, fueled by defensive energy and fast-paced play.
Second Quarter: Navy Closes the Gap
Navy struck first in the second quarter, slicing the lead to 16-11 on a smooth mid-range jumper. Both teams struggled with turnovers and sloppy play, but Army’s defense held strong. Brooke Wilson continued her standout performance, burying a deep three for her 8th point and grabbing her second rebound, proving to be a constant thorn in the Midshipmen’s side.
With 5:00 left in the half, Army led 19-14 after Reardon split a pair of free throws. Navy refused to back down, converting key baskets to close the gap. Freshman Reardon responded with a clutch three-pointer to put Army up 23-16, and although a controversial foul call on a clean block by Fiona Hastick gave Navy free throws, the Black Knights kept their composure.
Cam Tade’s hustle led to a critical jump ball, and Reese Ericson hit a huge three late in the quarter after Navy had cut the lead to just two. Navy answered with a crafty score under the hoop, and the teams went to halftime with Army holding a slim 26-23 advantage.

Halftime Analysis
This edition of Army-Navy lived up to its billing through the first 20 minutes. Army’s energy and execution in the first quarter gave them control, but Navy’s resilience and adjustments made it a contest headed into the break. The battle for rebounds and turnovers was fierce, with Army’s 7 assists on 10 made field goals highlighting their willingness to share the ball, while Navy’s persistence on the boards kept them in reach.
With both teams fighting for first place, the second half promised even more intensity in this timeless rivalry.

Navy opened the second half with energy, scoring the first basket to cut the Army lead to 26-25. Moments later, Navy seized its first lead of the game at 27-26 with 8:05 left. Army struggled to respond until Reese Ericson broke the drought, tying the game at 29-29 with 7:15 left in the third.
Taylor Wilson hit a fadeaway jumper to give Army a 31-29 edge, but Navy countered with back-to-back threes, pushing the Midshipmen ahead 34-31 — their biggest lead so far. Army called a timeout to regroup. Brooke Wilson answered to cut it to 34-33, but Navy’s Zanai Barnett-Gay stole a pass and finished alone to stretch Navy’s lead to 36-33.
Despite being outplayed for stretches, Army trailed by only three at the media timeout. Navy’s Mesuch drilled a huge three to make it 39-33 out of the break. Taylor Wilson knocked down a much-needed three to trim the margin, and Kya Smith pulled down a key rebound. The Black Knights, however, continued to struggle offensively.
With under two minutes left, Cam Tade converted a tough fadeaway and completed the three-point play to tie the game.
Afterward post game we spoke with Army’s head coach Katie Kuester who pointed to the group’s response in moments like that:
“They made some good runs in the second half, but I thought we responded really well.” The crowd was on its feet as Army’s defense forced a turnover, and Tade delivered again to put Army up 41-39.
Navy tied it, but a free throw by Montrose gave Army a 42-41 lead at the end of the third. The intensity was palpable, and the outcome was still very much in doubt.
Fourth Quarter: The Resilience of the Long Gray Line
With the game on the wire, Army faced a critical adversity: their season’s leading scorer, Kya Smith, had been completely neutralized by Navy’s interior defense (0 points, 5 rebounds). In past years, this might have signaled the end, but the 2026 Black Knights found a different gear through a gritty triumvirate.
While Reese Ericson (13 pts) commanded the headlines with her late shooting, it was Brooke Wilson who provided the steady pulse that kept Army alive. Wilson played a complete game, tallying 10 points and grabbing 5 rebounds, fighting through the paint to create second-chance opportunities when the offense stalled.

She formed a relentless tandem with Cam Tade (11 pts, 6 assists), orchestrating an offense that had to scrap for every inch. The crowd tried to rally the team through, but they fell just short on the final shot.
The final sequence captured the essence of the rivalry. Trailing 54-48 with 30 seconds left, Ericson drilled a deep three to make it 54-51, but it was the collective 34-point effort from Ericson, Wilson, and Tade that forced Navy to sweat until the final buzzer.
Ericson delivered one more time, drilling a three-pointer to cut it to 54-51 with 13 seconds left. We spoke with Reese following the game:
After the final horn, she said she welcomed the responsibility in that moment: “I appreciate my coaches giving me the trust to take that shot.” Even with the miss late, her focus stayed forward: “This team responds — we’re going to respond again.”
Navy closed it out to sweep the season series, keep first place, and sing second at Christl Arena. We spoke with coach Taylor post-game:
Their head coach Tim Taylor, framed the win as a payoff for the program’s foundation: “I’m really happy for our seniors. What they’ve been through, what they’ve built — we wouldn’t be where we are today without their commitment.”
When we asked Zoe Mesuch what it meant, the environment matched the stakes.
“It was really fun. I’ve never been in an environment like this,” she said. “I just wanted to win for my team and the seniors and get the Star.”
