Raindrops drummed on helmets, slicking jerseys and turning sideline cheers into a muffled roar as the teams took the field at B.T. Harvey Stadium in Atlanta. The No. 10 Army West Point men’s lacrosse team (4-0) remained unbeaten with a hard-fought 13-11 victory over Michigan (3-2) on this rainy Saturday. Four different Black Knights posted at least four points, and senior goalkeeper Sean Byrne made a season-high 15 saves to anchor the win.
Game Summary
Army overcame a slow start and an early 4-2 deficit, rallying behind a balanced offensive attack and a clutch defensive effort. Gunnar Fellows led all scorers with five points (4G, 1A), including a crucial fourth-quarter hat trick to help Army pull away. “We played for each other and kept our heads up,” Fellows said after the win. Brayden Fountain (3G, 1A), Evan Plunkett (1G, 3A), and Hill Plunkett (1G, 3A) also had standout performances.
After trading goals in the first half, Michigan entered halftime with a slim 7-5 lead. Army surged in the third quarter, with Fellows netting back-to-back goals to tie the game at 8 before Hill Plunkett put Army ahead for the first time late in the period. Fountain’s third goal pushed the lead to 10-8 entering the final frame.
The Black Knights extended their advantage to 13-10 in the fourth quarter, capped by goals from Fellows, Aiden Weisenborn, and Tyler Clark. Michigan made a late push, but Army’s defense and Byrne’s timely saves sealed the win.
