Poor start doomed them right away
Los Angeles, CA- After a tough loss to the Anaheim Ducks the other night, the New York Rangers headed for downtown Los Angeles to face the Kings in a big market matchup. But everything unraveled quickly for the Broadway Blueshirts as they took on the Tinsel Town side. While they almost tied the game within the final seconds, the Rangers fell by a final score of four to three.
Poor start, but tied the game in the back end
The Rangers played one of their worst games to start a period. While the Kings are solid on the rush, the Rangers had no answers trying to defend them, and they quickly found themselves behind the eight ball right away. After the puck drop and their first offensive shift, the Kings quickly found themselves with the puck and wasted no time delivering the first blow of the game.
It took only 18 seconds for the Kings to break out of their own end when Corey Perry got the puck at the near boards and made the long pass to Adrian Kempe at the far side at center ice. He entered the Rangers’ zone with a quick back pass to Brandt Clarke, then back to Kempe, and he roofed it over Jonathan Quick’s left shoulder.
The Rangers did find a way to tie the game when Noah Laba was in the far corner, trying to protect the puck, and then made the long cross-ice pass to the near point at Scott Morrow. He skated toward the slot and ripped a shot that deflected off Will Cuylle. Darcy Kuemper did make the save, but the rebound hit a Kings defender and trickled through Kuemper’s pads and in at 8:18 of the first period.
But 42 seconds later, another disaster by the Rangers, as they failed to pay attention at the far faceoff circle. After the Rangers won the draw, they passed it back toward their net. The puck went toward Valdislav Gavriokv, and he tried to pass it out. That’s when Kevin Fiala jumped right away at the puck to block it and flipped it in past Quick at 9:00 of the first period.
But the Rangers found another way to tie the game up toward the back end of the opening period. After winning the draw, Braden Schneider got the puck at the near point and passed it down low to J.T. Miller. Then a cycle started with Miller and Mika Zibanejad down low on the near end. Miller would circle back, go down the slot, and take the pass from Zibanejad and smacked it home at 16:36 of the first period.
Goalie switch due to injury
This was the beginning of the end for the Rangers when Darcy Kuemper was trying to flex his right leg/ankle/foot after he took a slight bump from Johnny Brodzinsky at his near post. He was defending his net when the slight contact was made, but it was enough to cause him discomfort, and he was forced to leave the game. That’s when Anton Forsberg came in for him, and the door was completely shut.
Poor job on the impossible angle
For the third time in this game, the Rangers failed to pay attention toward the action in front of them, as they couldn’t stop the puck. While the play was along the near boards and the Rangers were defending both Samuel Helenius and Jeff Malott, the puck somehow found Taylor Ward near the icing line. Schneider tried to defend the play, but couldn’t. Then Quick somehow misplayed the puck or gave a slight inch of net to Ward, and he scored from an impossible angle at 4:23 of the second period.
Rebound sweep on the backhand
The Kings continued to outskate and outwork the Rangers inside their zone. The puck was at the far boards, just inside the blue line. Alec Turcotte dug the puck out and gave it to Fiala at the top of the zone, and took the long shot on goal. Quick made the save, but the rebound was right there for a wide-open Andrei Kuzmenko, who backhanded it in for the two goal lead at 12:37 of the second period.
A ray of hope with little time left
Inside the final minute of the game, the Rangers somehow found a way to solve Anton Forsberg when they won the draw at the near faceoff circle. Vincent Trocheck won the draw toward Gavrikov, then made the pass to J.T. Miller at the near boards, and he blasted a one-timer past Forsberg at 19:33 of the third period, giving the Rangers about 28 seconds left to find a tying goal.
Just missed it, and game over
The Rangers had one more chance to score the tying goal, but only had 4.4 seconds remaining. The faceoff on the far side was won by J.T. Miller and the Rangers nearly executed the play perfectly, but when Artemi Panarin had the puck on his blade, he just shot it wide ofthe near post and the buzzer sounded to end the game and the Rangers lost their second straight in Southern California.
“They obviously set the tone early with the goal 18 seconds in. How many times have I talked to you guys about critical moments in games, the start of periods, the start of games, the last minute, after a goal scored, after a fight? You know, like those are critical moments in games where teams have an opportunity to build momentum.
I do think we responded. I thought we responded after it. You know, it’s 2-2 after the first period, so I felt like we did respond, but, you know, it’s an instance where there’s just not a lot of attention to detail there. And so. But I do think we responded. I thought the fight we had in the third period was really good,” said head coach Mike Sullivan
MIKA ZIBANEJAD: Extended his point streak to 10-straight games (9G-10A), tied for the longest such streak of his career (2023-24). Through his last 10 games, his 19 points are tied for the second most in the league.
