Another point dropped after a successful Winter Classic road game victory

New York, NY- The New York Rangers returned to Madison Square Garden after another fabulous road victory and their sixth victory in an Outdoor game with the Winter Classic in Miami. They took on the Utah Mammoth and battled all night, but unfortunately, they couldn’t secure the second point to put them over the hump, as they fell in overtime by a final score of three to two.

Shesterkin gets injured in the first period

The Rangers lost Igor Shesterkin to a lower-body injury when he was attempting to defend a breakaway from the Mammoth attacker. As soon as he got close to Shesterkin, it looked like Igor either got bumped into or put himself into a strange position that saw him fall into his own net and reeled in pain. He couldn’t put any weight on his left ankle and was helped off to the locker room during the first period.

Quick gets run over and shows his frustration

Jonathan Quick took over for Sheserkin at the 14 minute mark of the first period and played the rest of the way. During the second period, he was trying to defend a rush by the Mammoth when Daniil But lost a bit of control, turned his back, and slammed into Quick, shoving him into his own net. That made Quick irate and started going after, But that awarded him a penalty for goaltender interference, and Quick also got a penalty for roughing.

The referees should be aware of what is intentional goalie interference and what isn’t. Remember what happened last season when Utah came to the Garden as Will Cuylle was called for goalie interference, but he had a defenseman on him while the goalie came out of his crease to play the puck, and then got bumped. That’s not what the penalty was meant to be, but what happened to Quick inside his crease did happen, and the arm should’ve been up right away.

Perfect passing for the lead

The Rangers have been very hot on the power play, and they scored the opening goal with the man advantage. The setup was exquisite when Artemi Panarin was along the far boards, found Mika Zibanejad down low at the near side, who saw Alexis Lafreniere at the doorstep of the crease and tapped the puck into an open net at 8:29 of the second period.

Poor pass led to a breakaway

After the Rangers took the lead, the Mammoth found a way to tie the game. The puck was dumped toward the Mammoth end, but not all the way, fumbling it at the blueline. That gave Ian Cole the chance to corral the puck and send Dylan Guenther into a breakaway down the near side. As he got toward the net, his first shot was stopped by Quick, but the rebound was roofed into the top shelf at 12:38 of the second period.

Another Power Play Goal

The Rangers went back to the power play and regained the lead. It was a five-on-three power play as two separate Mammoth players went to the box. Guenther for tripping and Alexander Kerfoot for SLashing. They were preparing for another power play goal and got it when Zibanejad was at the near point, then passed it to Panarin at the far point. Both men changed places at the point, then a shot by Panarin that was deflected in front by Vincent Trocheck and in at 16:36 of the second period.

Another poor play at the boards

The Mammoth were looking for the tying goal, and they saw the Rangers’ weakness near the boards. Once again, their defensemen just couldn’t make the stop, as Urho Vaakanainen got beaten by Michael Carcone when he got the puck in the neutral zone and skated around Vaakanainen to cut in front of Quick and tucked it inside the far post at 6:15 of the third period.

Tusked in overtime

The Rangers won the faceoff and held possession first. When they tried to make a play inside the offensive zone, they were forced to retreat into their own end. Then the Mammoth took advantage by stealing the puck from the Rangers, and then Sean Durzi received the pass to snap one past Quick for the second point at 1:06 of overtime.

More frustration

While the Rangers did play a good game, they were beaten by not defending the wide areas and the boards, and that allowed the Mammoth to take advantage on breakaways, which is one of their strong points this season. It’s great to see them staying hot on the power play, as they scored five goals in three games, but their overall game needs work.

It’s also disappointing that after a strong and complete game in the Winter Classic, they return home and drop a point for no reason. They must get better with the remaining games they have before the Olympic break comes next month. They may be just outside the wildcard playoff line, but these dropped points at home will be a huge issue down the road.

“I thought the first half of the period, you know, I didn’t think we played with the level of intensity that we needed to. And so as a result, they got momentum from the very first shift. And I thought, you know, probably around the halfway mark, we started to push back, and then we started to get established some ozone time. But I thought, in the first ten minutes of that period, we certainly didn’t play with the same level of intensity or quickness that we needed to.

You know, Utah, they’re a fast team. They’re young, and they’re fast. And, you know, there needs to be a level of intensity and execution to your game. I didn’t think we had it at the beginning of the third period. As I said, I thought we responded. The second half of it. I didn’t think, you know, I didn’t think the first period we were the better team. I thought they were the better team in the first period.

I thought we were the better team in the second. I thought, you know, our intentions in playing their game the right way in the second. was very different. But our challenge is to find a way to bring that consistently. I mean, it’s a game of momentum. Sometimes teams are going to get it. You’re going to get on your heels. But, you know, it can’t be for extended periods. We’ve got to do a better job with pushback,” said head coach Mike Sullivan.

POWER PLAY: Since Dec. 31, the Rangers are 5-for-8 on the power play. Their five power play goals are tied for the most in the league in that time span, and their 62.5 power play percentage ranks first.

ARTEMI PANARIN: Has tallied three-straight multi-point games (2G-5A) and has recorded at least one assist in four-straight games (6A). He notched his 13th multi-point game of the season and his 94th career multi-assist game, surpassing Andy Bathgate (93) for the fifth most in franchise history.

MIKA ZIBANEJAD: Recorded two assists, his ninth multi-point game of the season, extending his point streak to three straight games (3G-5A).

VINCENT TROCHECK: Scored his tenth goal of the season and first on the power play, extending his point streak to four straight contests (2G-3A).
