Rangers fall in Overtime to the Hurricanes

Lost on the Power Play during the extra period

Raleigh, NC- The New York Rangers headed toward the state of North Carolina, as they faced the Carolina Hurricanes at the Lenovo Center. After a hard-fought game with tons of action and strong goaltending, it would be the Hurricanes who defeated the Rangers in overtime by a final score of three to two.

Gavrikov’s first Power Play Goal

The Rangers earned their first power play of the game when Noah Laba got slashed on his right hand. As they worked the puck inside the Hurricanes’ zone. Vincent Trocheck at the far boards worked it back to the point to Artemi Panarin. He gave the Hurricanes a look for a shot, but he faked it for a pass to Vladislav Gavrikov, who ripped it and beat the goaltender at 1:39 of the first period on the power play.

Hurricanes tied it up on the power play

The Hurricanes got on the power play when Johnny Brodzinsky was called for a trip, then during the kill, Braden Schneider lifted the puck over the glass on a clear attempt, giving the Hurricanes a two-man advantage. Nikolaj Ehlers at the far faceoff circle sent the puck back to the far point toward Alexander Nikishin. He then passed it to Sebastian Aho at the far point. Snapped a shot to tie the game by using Will Borgen as a screen at 15:57 of the first period on the power play.

Rangers retake the lead

A well-worked goal by the Rangers as they were looking to regain the lead when Matt Rempe skated hard to the near corner. He retrieved the puck and made a pass to Matthew Robertson at the point. When Robertson took the shot that was deflected by Sam Carrick in the slot, that redirected toward Brodzinsky, and he stuffed the puck into an open net at 13:00 of the second period.

Tied game again on a deflected shot

The Hurricanes caught the Rangers on a late shift and were buzzing inside the offensive zone. K’Andre Miller received the puck at the near point and made the cross-ice pass toward the far boards to Jalen Chatfield. The shot was taken, and the puck was originally saved by Igor Shesterkin, but the rebound was deflected off Jordan Martinook and slithered completely over the goal line.

Some might have thought there was goaltender interference by Martinook, but the shot got to Shesterkin first and then into the net. Martinook then fell into Shesterkin after the puck had already slid behind him, and there was no challenge from the Rangers as the game was tied at 9:11 of the third period.

Hurricanes win on the power play

The game ended at two all after regulation time. within the final two minutes of the overtime period. Robertson was called for tripping, and the Hurricanes went to the power play. On the four-on-three power play, the Hurricanes worked the puck from the top of the zone. Ehlers at the near side sent the puck back up top to Aho, and he ripped a hard shot, but in front of Shesterkin was Jackson Blake, deflecting the puck past Shesterkin to win it in overtime at 4:47.

Strong game, but dropped a point

The was a tough loss for the Rangers, but they played a good game. Just a poor decision by Robertson to somehow put his stick under his man’s skates and trip him up, but this was a good game the either team was going to win. You thought they were going to head for the shootout, but unfortunately, the tipped shot by Blake snuck through Shesterkin’s pads.

“I thought we competed hard, you know, I thought… Five on five. You know, we had our moments. We had some offensive zone time. You know, I thought obviously the difference in the game, we gave up a five-on-three and a four-on-three. And, you know, you can’t put yourself down in those circumstances. That puts us all in tough spots. There’s a play on the inside.

You know, you look at the goal we scored, Johnny Brodzinski’s goal, for example, you know, we create off the shot. And that’s what we’re trying to encourage the guys to do more of, especially against a team that defends as well as this team does. And just having a willingness to simplify the game, create more off the shot. There needs to be a willingness to get inside to do that. I thought, for the most part, the guys were trying to do that tonight,” said Head Coach Mike Sullivan

VLADISLAV GAVRIKOV: Opened the scoring for the Blueshirts with his first career power play goal and notched his career season-high of seven goals.

ARTEMI PANARIN: Tallied an assist on Gavrikov’s power play goal. He has recorded five points (3G-2A) through his last five games, and has tallied 12 points in his last seven road games in Carolina.

VINCENT TROCHECK: Recorded an assist on Gavrikov’s power play goal. He has six points (3G-3A) through his last six games.

JOHNNY BRODZINSKY: Scored his fourth goal of the season. He has tallied four points (2G-2A) through his last four games.
