Last season’s Backup gets a new deal
Harrison, NJ- The New York Red Bulls have signed Goalkeeper A.J. Marcucci to a new four-year deal to remain with the club till the end of the 2029 season, with an option for the 2030 season.
Marcucci’s 2025 season
He started in seven matches in all competitions. He started against Toronto FC on March 22nd in a two goals to nil victory, started in two home matches in the Leagues Cup with a one goal clean sheet victory over Guadalajara, and won in the shootout after a one goal draw against FC Juarez. Started in all three U.S. Open Cup matches with a four goals to one win at Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the Fourth Round.
Won in a penalty shootout against FC Dallas at Sports Illustrated Stadium after a two-goal draw in regulation and after extra time in the Fifth Round. Went down to Chester to face the Philadelphia Union in the Quarterfinals as they fell in second half stoppage time by a final of three goals to two, as Marcucci suffered a ruptured ACL landing wrong, swatting a crossed ball in front of him.
“We are pleased to sign A.J. to a new long-term contract to keep him with the club,” said Head of Sport Julian de Guzman. “Despite his season-ending injury, A.J. had a fantastic stretch with us this past year, and we believe in his abilities and our excited to continue to have him as a part of this organization.”
Marcucci with Red Bulls II
Marcucci was taken in the 2021 MLS Super Draft from Connecticut College. He started with Red Bulls II in his first four seasons with the club. Made 54 appearances with 12 clean sheets in USL Championship before the club moved to MLS Next Pro in the 2023 season. Marcucci was a finalist for MLS Next Pro Goalkeeper of the Year in 2023 and went on loan to IF Gnistan in the Finnish Veikkausliiga league, located in Helsinki, in 2024.
“A.J. is a great goalkeeper and person that we believe has a bright future ahead of him,” said Head Coach Michael Bradley. “We are grateful to keep him at the club, and we are looking forward to having him back on the pitch after his recovery process.”
The goalkeeping situation
With the Red Bulls’ goalkeeping situation now with John McCarthy and Marcucci locked up for this upcoming season, the hope is that these two, when called upon, will put the Red Bulls into a better position to earn wins. Or will Director of Sport Julian DeGuzman look into the Winter Transfer Window for another veteran goalkeeper? Plenty of time to look ahead.
