West Point, NY — Army West Point men’s basketball (6-7) closed out their non-conference schedule with a statement, outlasting Binghamton 95-85 in overtime at Christl Arena. The Black Knights snapped a three-game skid against the Bearcats, improved to 10-6 in the all-time series, and head into Patriot League play riding a three-game win streak and victories in five of their last six contests.
The game was a gritty, back-and-forth battle from the outset. Army jumped out to an early lead behind quick buckets from Jacen Holloway and Tate Laczkowski, but Binghamton’s unexpected five-guard lineup threw the young Black Knights off balance. Head Coach Kevin Kuwik admitted, “The first half, they played five guards. We had not prepared for that. It was a funky first half. Our young team was kind of frustrated. At halftime, it wasn’t any magical coaching. Our guys just figured it out, dug deep, and they did an awesome job in the second half and overtime.”
Binghamton led 32-30 at halftime, but Army came out firing after the break. Ryan Curry and Jaxson Bell sparked a 9-0 run, and the Black Knights built a double-digit lead midway through the second half. The Bearcats, however, refused to go away, storming back with an 8-0 run and tie the game at 76 in the closing seconds to force overtime. Army drew up a final play for Furman, but as Kuwik described, “He got in deep. Couldn’t get his footing. Maybe he got pushed. Maybe Jordan was open. I don’t know. We tried. Credit to them. They did a good job guarding it. And then credit to us for coming back in overtime and not skipping a beat.”

In overtime, Army’s resilience shone through. Jackson Furman’s layup off the jump ball set the tone, and Bell drilled a three-pointer to give the Black Knights the edge. Curry and Bell combined for clutch free throws, and Army outscored Binghamton 19-9 in the extra period to secure the victory. Bell finished with a career-high 24 points on 66.7% shooting (5-of-7 from three), adding six rebounds. “I’m just playing my role. My teammates and coaches are putting me in positions to make plays, and I’m thriving off of it. I love the energy, playing out there, communicating with my teammates, and just playing together,” Bell reflected. Curry was just shy of a triple-double with 23 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Furman added 13 points and four boards.
Curry, reflecting on the team’s effort and focus, said, “We knew we were the better team, and we played like it today.”Despite some struggles at the free-throw line, Curry remained confident: “That’s not a concern. The guys constantly get free throws up, so that shouldn’t be a problem going on. I’m confident we’ll knock them in next time.”

Coach Kuwik praised the chemistry developing between Bell, Curry, and Furman, noting, “When Jaxson Bell got healthy, he came back, and he clicked. That’s when we started clicking. So I’m proud of him. He made some really big plays today. Ryan’s Ryan. Jackson Furman has done some really special things. I’m proud of the whole team. These guys are awesome. They love each other.”
Looking ahead, Army enters Patriot League play with momentum but remains grounded. “Three games don’t win your Patriot League championship. That’s our goal. We’ve got to keep going. Next time, get in a conference play, we’re 0-0. So we’ve got to go prove ourselves some more,” said Curry. Bell added, “Definitely resting, sleep as much as possible, recover. Then just stay focused on our mission. Our mission is to win a championship, ultimately. So continue to get better every day and come back ready to work again.”
Army opens conference play at Lehigh on Dec. 31, aiming to carry its resilience, chemistry, and winning ways into the heart of the season.
