Army West Point women's basketball players celebrate enthusiastically from the bench during game at Mohegan Sun Arena, November 2025

Army West Point women's basketball players erupt in celebration from the bench during a Patriot League game at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, in November 2025. The Black Knights' bench energy and team unity reflect the competitive spirit and camaraderie that define head coach Katie Kuester's program. Army's strong start to the 2025-26 season, highlighted by dominant performances and balanced scoring, has been fueled by contributions from both starters and reserves who remain engaged and invested in every possession. Smith Extends Double-Digit Scoring Streak to Six Games; Black Knights Shoot Season-Best 52.6%, Hold Red Flash to 28.3% in Dominant Performance

LORETTO, Pa. â€“ The Army West Point women’s basketball team led for over 39 minutes en route to an 82-50 road victory over Saint Francis on Friday afternoon at DeGol Arena in front of 375 fans.

Army (5-1) delivered its best shooting performance of the season and completely shut down Saint Francis (0-6) on the defensive end of the court. The Black Knights’ 52.6% shooting clip was their best of the season and their second consecutive game shooting 50% or better.

Defensively, Army held Saint Francis to 28.3% shooting—the worst shooting percentage by an Army opponent this season and the worst since Mt. St. Mary (NY) shot 23.3% on Dec. 29, 2024.

Kya Smith led Army with 15 points and nine rebounds, extending her double-digit scoring streak to six games to open the season. Camryn Tade added 14 points, while Reese Ericson (11 points, six assists) and Taylor Wilson (11 points, five rebounds) also reached double figures.

“Happy to be in a positive assist-to-turnover ratio. Seventeen to eleven, that’s huge,” Army head coach Katie Kuester said. “I thought we had really even scoring… That’s how we want to operate. That’s our brand of Army West Point women’s basketball. We’re selfless, we share the basketball, 17 assists: super proud of them for that.”

First Quarter: Black Knights Seize Control with 13-0 Run

Army got off to a strong start in the first quarter and never looked back. The Black Knights led 11-7 right before the first media timeout and proceeded to go on a 13-0 run that stretched the final 5:36 of the first quarter and 2:50 of the second.

The run began with a Tade layup at 5:36, followed by a steal and transition bucket from Brooke Wilson at 6:32. Army’s defense forced five consecutive Saint Francis turnovers during the stretch, and the Black Knights capitalized with efficient offense.

Stella Chartrand added a layup at 2:28, and Smith capped the run with a layup at 0:21 to give Army an 18-7 lead after the opening quarter.

Army’s ferocious defense held the Red Flash to 3-for-12 (25%) shooting from the field in the first quarter, including just 1-for-2 from three-point range. The Black Knights forced seven turnovers and scored seven points off those miscues.

Chartrand continued her strong performance with a three-pointer at 4:53, and Wilson added a jumper at 4:19 to extend the lead to 34-14.

Going into the halftime break, Army was in complete control, leading 38-21. The 17-point lead was the largest at halftime for Army this season.

The Black Knights shot 51.7% (15-for-29) from the field in the first half, while limiting Saint Francis to 32.1% (9-for-28). Smith had 10 of her 15 points in the opening 20 minutes, while Ericson and Chartrand each had six.

“It’s been a long stretch of travel, so I really am grateful to come out of this six-game stretch at 5-1,” Kuester said.
