League Revives Probe After New Allegations Surface in Guardian Report

Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Union announced Wednesday that Sporting Director Ernst Tanner has been placed on administrative leave as Major League Soccer reopens an investigation into allegations of discriminatory workplace conduct, marking a significant development in a case the league had previously closed.

The decision comes after The Guardian published a report detailing allegations that Tanner made racist comments about Black players, coaches, and referees, while also using sexist and anti-gay language in the workplace. The allegations were originally submitted to MLS through an MLS Players Association complaint.

Union’s Response: Zero Tolerance for Misconduct

In a statement released Wednesday, the Philadelphia Union emphasised its commitment to workplace safety and inclusivity while confirming full cooperation with the reopened investigation.

“The Philadelphia Union takes all allegations of misconduct extremely seriously and is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone associated with our club,” the club stated. “Discrimination, harassment, or abusive conduct of any kind has no place here, and all staff are required to complete annual sensitivity training.”

The Union confirmed that while MLS previously investigated the allegations and was unable to corroborate the claims, the league has now advised the club that it will reopen the investigation. Tanner’s administrative leave will remain in effect throughout the investigative process.

“Throughout this process, our top priority remains the well-being of our players, fans, staff, and community,” the statement concluded.

MLS Investigation Timeline: From Closure to Reopening

MLS initially launched an investigation after the Players Association brought forward the allegations, which the MLSPA noted had not been independently verified at the time. The league’s first investigation included interviews with more than a dozen current and former players and club employees.

According to MLS, participants were offered anonymity and assured protection from retaliation. A majority of those contacted participated—several anonymously—while others declined. After reviewing all available information and documentation, the initial investigation concluded it was unable to substantiate the allegations.

Despite the inconclusive findings, MLS required Tanner to participate in a structured remedial program focused on professional workplace conduct—a measure that suggested the league took the allegations seriously even without corroboration.

New Information Prompts Reopened Investigation

The league’s decision to reopen the case follows The Guardian’s recent publication, which MLS says included “new allegations and potentially new information” not available during the initial investigation.

“Following publication of a Guardian article that included new allegations and potentially new information, MLS will reopen the investigation,” the league stated. “MLS maintains an anonymous reporting hotline and encourages anyone with relevant information to come forward.”

The league’s anonymous reporting system allows current and former employees, players, and other individuals with knowledge of workplace misconduct to provide information without fear of identification or retaliation.

Tanner’s Tenure with Philadelphia Union

Ernst Tanner joined the Philadelphia Union as Sporting Director in 2018, bringing extensive experience from European soccer operations. Under his leadership, the Union experienced significant on-field success, including multiple playoff appearances and the development of young talent that attracted international attention.

In 2021, Tanner signed a contract extension with the club, reflecting the organization’s confidence in his vision and management. The Union reached the MLS Cup final in 2022 and has consistently been among the Eastern Conference’s top teams during its tenure.

Tanner’s responsibilities included overseeing player recruitment, contract negotiations, academy development, and overall soccer operations strategy. His work helped establish Philadelphia as one of MLS’s most respected organizations for player development and tactical innovation.

Broader Context: MLS and Workplace Culture

The reopened investigation comes amid increased scrutiny of workplace culture across professional sports leagues. MLS has faced multiple high-profile investigations into misconduct allegations in recent years, leading to policy changes and enhanced reporting mechanisms.

The league has implemented mandatory sensitivity training for all staff, established anonymous reporting hotlines, and created protocols designed to protect individuals who come forward with allegations. The Tanner case will test the effectiveness of these systems and the league’s commitment to accountability.

The Players Association’s role in bringing forward the initial allegations highlights the union’s growing influence in advocating for player welfare beyond traditional labor issues such as salaries and working conditions.

What Happens Next

The reopened investigation’s timeline remains unclear. MLS has not announced when it expects to complete the probe or what potential outcomes Tanner might face if allegations are substantiated.

Possible outcomes could range from additional remedial training and monitoring to suspension or termination, depending on the investigation’s findings. The Union will need to determine interim leadership for soccer operations during Tanner’s absence, a critical period as the club prepares for the 2026 season.

The investigation will likely include renewed interviews with players, staff, and other individuals who may have witnessed or experienced the alleged conduct. The Guardian’s report may have encouraged additional individuals to come forward with information they previously withheld.

Impact on Philadelphia Union Operations

Tanner’s administrative leave creates uncertainty for the Union during a crucial period. The club must navigate offseason roster decisions, contract negotiations, and preparation for the 2026 MLS season without its top soccer executive.

The Union’s front office will need to establish clear lines of authority and decision-making processes to ensure continuity. Assistant coaches, technical staff, and remaining front office personnel will likely assume expanded responsibilities until the investigation concludes.

The situation also creates potential challenges for player recruitment and retention. Prospective signings may hesitate to commit to a club facing leadership uncertainty, while current players may seek clarity about the organization’s direction and values.

Community and Fan Response

The allegations and subsequent administrative leave have generated significant discussion among Union supporters and the broader Philadelphia soccer community. Fans have expressed concerns about the club’s culture and called for transparency throughout the investigative process.

Supporters’ groups and community organizations that partner with the Union will be watching closely to see how the club handles the situation and what steps it takes to ensure accountability and cultural change if allegations are proven.

The Union’s emphasis on maintaining “a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment” will be measured against its actions in the coming weeks and months, not just its public statements.

The Path Forward

Regardless of the investigation’s outcome, the Philadelphia Union faces important questions about workplace culture, accountability, and leadership. The club’s response to this crisis will define its reputation and values for years to come.

MLS’s decision to reopen the investigation demonstrates the league’s recognition that initial findings may not always capture the full picture, particularly when individuals may be reluctant to come forward initially. The anonymous reporting system and protection against retaliation are designed to encourage transparency.

For Ernst Tanner, the reopened investigation represents a critical juncture in his career. If cleared, he will need to rebuild trust with players, staff, and the community. If allegations are substantiated, he will face serious professional consequences, and the Union will need to chart a new course.

The Philadelphia Union has built a reputation as one of MLS’s model organizations. How the club navigates this challenge will determine whether that reputation endures or requires rebuilding from the ground up.
