Buffalo, N.Y. — In their only game of the weekend, the Army Black Knights traveled up to Buffalo to take on the Canisius Golden Griffins in a tight game that would have to be decided in the shootout. Earlier this season Army won in a shootout on the road against Union College, but this time it would be Canisius who stole the extra point from the Black Knights after clawing back into the game in the third period.
Sophomore goaltender JJ Cataldo made 23 saves on 25 shots, while Jude Brower continues his great start with his third goal of the season, and sophomore Jack Ivey scored his first goal since taking on Northeastern in early October.
The shootout loss drops Army to 3-2-2 overall and 1-2-1 in Atlantic Hockey play, while Holy Cross improves to 5-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference action as well.

This game got off to a different start in Buffalo than at West Point. In the first period, Army dominated play, recording 10 shots and holding Canisius to just three in the first 20 minutes.
That pressure carried over for the Black Knights in the second period, and it would be Jude Brower who would give Army the 1-0 lead just 40 seconds in. Entering the zone as the fourth skater, Brower had all the room in the world to fire a shot from the high slot and beat Chase Clark.
The Grffins would answer at the halfway point of the game, but Army would regain their lead just three minutes later. Army’s power play to start the season hasn’t had a lot of success, but Jack Ivey would net the Black Knights just their second power play goal of the season. With a blistering shot through four bodies and past an unsuspecting Clark, Ivey would send Army into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Canisius would eventually find a second equalizer late in the third period to force overtime. Both teams went up and down the ice for the full five-minute overtime, but neither team was able to find a winner. A shootout would decide which team took home the extra point.
Army had success and won their previous shootout against Union College to open the season, but today was a different story. Dylan Wegner and captain Barron Woodring converted for Army on that night, but tonight, sophomore Vincent Salice and freshman Billy Batten stepped up for the Black Knights, both stopped by Chase Clark.
For Canisius, both Killian Kiecker-Olson and Walter Zacher converted for the Griffins to send the home crowd happy with the extra point in AHA conference play.
Looking Ahead to Next Weekend
Army (3-2-2) is back in action next weekend in a home-and-home series with Bentley (4-3, 4-0 AHA). The Black Knights will travel to Waltham, Massachusetts, on Friday, November 7th, with puck drop at 7:00 pm, before returning to Tate Rink on November 9th to face the Falcons at 2:00 pm.
After beginning the season 0-3 in non-conference play, the 2024-2025 AHA playoff champion Falcons swept both series against Canisius and Mercyhurst to enter Friday’s contest with a four-game winning streak. This will be a huge test for head coach Zach McKelvie and his Black Knights.
