The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and locally on MSG Networks, with radio coverage on 98.7 ESPN. NEW YORK, NY – The New York Knicks return to Madison Square Garden tonight to face the Cleveland Cavaliers in an Eastern Conference matchup that features a web of coaching connections, hometown ties, and recent playoff history between the two franchises.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET at The Garden, with the game broadcast nationally on ESPN and locally on MSG Networks. Radio coverage will be available on 98.7 ESPN.

Recent History: Cavaliers Hold Edge

The Knicks and Cavaliers last met on April 11, 2025, when Cleveland escaped Madison Square Garden with a 108-102 victory in a tightly contested late-season game.

Knicks captain Jalen Brunson led New York with 27 points, two assists, one rebound, and one steal in the losing effort. Mikal Bridges contributed 17 points and a team-high eight assists, while OG Anunoby added 15 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Cleveland was paced by point guard Darius Garland, who recorded 26 points and 13 assists while orchestrating the Cavaliers’ offense. Evan Mobley posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Max Strus provided a spark with 19 points off the bench.

The April loss highlighted the Knicks’ ongoing challenge against Cleveland’s balanced attack and defensive versatility—issues New York will look to address in tonight’s rematch.

Coaching Carousel: Brown and Atkinson’s Intertwined Paths

Tonight’s game features a fascinating coaching storyline, as Knicks head coach Mike Brown faces off against Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson—two coaches whose careers have intersected multiple times over the past two decades.

Brown previously served as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers for five consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2010, leading the franchise during the LeBron James era. He returned for a second stint as Cleveland’s head coach during the 2013-14 season before eventually landing with the Knicks.

Atkinson, a Northport, New York native, spent four seasons as an assistant coach with the Knicks from 2008 to 2012 before embarking on a successful head coaching career with the Brooklyn Nets. Most recently, both Brown and Atkinson served as assistant coaches for the Golden State Warriors during the 2021-22 season, working together on Steve Kerr’s staff before taking their current head coaching positions.

Adding another layer to the coaching connections, Cavaliers associate head coach Johnnie Bryant spent four seasons as the Knicks’ associate head coach from 2020 to 2024, working closely with many of the current New York players before joining Cleveland’s staff this past offseason.

New York Connections Run Deep

The Cavaliers roster features several players with strong ties to the New York metropolitan area, adding local flavor to tonight’s matchup.

Cavaliers star guard Donovan Mitchell was born in Elmsford, New York, just 30 miles north of Madison Square Garden. Mitchell has consistently embraced his New York roots throughout his career and has been the subject of persistent trade rumors linking him to the Knicks over the past several seasons.

Cleveland’s front office also has New York connections. Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman hails from Brooklyn, while assistant coach Omar Cook was born in Brooklyn and attended St. John’s University in Queens.

On the Knicks’ side, guard Miles McBride was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, giving him a connection to the Cavaliers’ home state.

Roster Reunions and Past Teammates

Several players on both rosters share history as former teammates, creating additional storylines for tonight’s contest.

Cavaliers guard Lonzo Ball and Knicks guard Josh Hart were teammates on both the Los Angeles Lakers (2017-2019) and the New Orleans Pelicans (2019-2022), developing chemistry that both players have carried into their current roles.

Hart also has connections to Cavaliers center Thomas Bryant, with whom he played during the 2017-18 season in Los Angeles. Additionally, Hart and Cavaliers forward Larry Nance Jr. were famously traded for each other during the 2021-22 season—a transaction that sent Hart to Portland and Nance to New Orleans.

Knicks guard Jordan Clarkson and Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell were teammates on the Utah Jazz for three seasons from 2019 to 2022, forming part of a dynamic backcourt that helped Utah establish itself as a consistent playoff contender.

This Day in Knicks History: The Bernard King Trade

Tonight’s game falls on the anniversary of one of the most significant trades in Knicks’ franchise history. On October 22, 1982, New York acquired forward Bernard King from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for guard Micheal Ray Richardson and a 1984 fifth-round draft pick (Scott McCollum).

King would go on to become one of the greatest scorers in Knicks history, earning four All-Star selections during his tenure in New York and cementing his legacy as one of the franchise’s all-time greats. His number 30 jersey was retired by the Knicks in 2024.

On the same day in 1982, the Knicks also acquired forward Louis Orr from the Indiana Pacers for cash and a 1983 second-round draft pick (later traded to Seattle, where it became Scooter McCray).

Broadcast Legend Returns

Knicks fans tuning in to MSG Networks will hear the iconic voice of Walt “Clyde” Frazier, who has been calling Knicks games for decades. Interestingly, Frazier played three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1977 to 1980, closing out his Hall of Fame playing career in Cleveland before transitioning to broadcasting.

Looking Ahead

Following tonight’s matchup with Cleveland, the Knicks will host the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics on Friday, October 24th at 7:30 PM ET at Madison Square Garden—a marquee early-season showdown that will test New York’s championship aspirations.

For the Cavaliers, tonight’s game represents an opportunity to build momentum early in the season and establish themselves as a legitimate threat in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Keys to the Game

For the Knicks to secure a victory tonight, they’ll need to:

  • Contain Donovan Mitchell: The Elmsford native has consistently elevated his game at MSG. Limiting his scoring opportunities will be critical.
  • Dominate the Glass: Cleveland’s frontcourt, featuring Evan Mobley, presents a significant rebounding challenge. New York must control the boards to limit second-chance opportunities.
  • Execute in Crunch Time: The April loss came down to late-game execution. The Knicks must be sharper in clutch situations.
  • Leverage Home Court: Madison Square Garden’s energy can be a difference-maker. The Knicks need to feed off the crowd and establish an early tone.

For Cleveland, the keys include:

  • Balanced Scoring: The Cavaliers’ success hinges on contributions from Garland, Mitchell, and Mobley. All three must be engaged offensively.
  • Defensive Versatility: Switching effectively on the perimeter and protecting the rim will be essential against New York’s dynamic offense.
  • Control the Pace: Cleveland thrives in transition. Pushing tempo and creating easy baskets will be crucial.

The Bigger Picture

While it’s early in the season, tonight’s game carries significant weight for both franchises. The Knicks are looking to establish themselves as legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference, while the Cavaliers aim to prove they belong in the upper tier of playoff teams.

With coaching connections, hometown ties, and recent playoff battles providing added intrigue, tonight’s matchup promises to be a competitive, hard-fought contest between two teams with championship aspirations.

Tip-off is at 7:00 PM ET. Don’t miss it. Prediction: NY Knicks 108 – 99 Cleveland Cavaliers
