One mistake caused the Rangers to lose their first game of the season
New York, NY- The pomp and circumstance at Madison Square Garden was loud as the New York Rangers began their Centennial Season, wearing throwback jerseys when the Hockey Club was created back in 1926 by their original owner, Tex Rickard. But they couldn’t break down the Pittsburgh Penguins as they fell by a final score of three to zero.
Late Goal puts the Rangers behind
The faceoff at the near side of the Rangers zone, as Vincent Trocheck lost sight of the puck. Quickly picked up by Evgeni Malkin, made a quick pass to a wide open Justin Brazeau in front of the net. He stickhandled in front of Igor Shesterkin, then made a nifty backhander inside the far post at 19:28 of the first period.
Brazeau Empty Net
The game ended in a whimper when Mike Sullivan pulled Shesterkin for the extra attacker as they attacked the Penguins’ zone. The Rangers lost the puck along the far boards. Anthony Mantha dug it out, gave it to Malkin, a quick pass to Brazeau, and he skated for the empty net and scored his second of the game at 17:48 of the third period.
Another Empty Net
The Rangers kept their net empty again, allowing the Penguins to score another goal. Ryan Shea passed the puck to the far boards to Blake Lizotte, firing it all the way down inside his own blue line, and scored at 18:08 of the third period.
Igor Shesterkin did his job
Igor Shesterkin had a strong game, but he was let down by his team. Vincent Trocheck won the faceoff but placed the puck into the high slot where nobody was, leaving it unplayable by a Ranger and an easy tap-in for Brazeau. Went 0 for 2 on the power play, and not a lot of clean shots to beat Arturs Silovs, who made all 25 saves in the shutout.
Harrison Brunicke Makes History
Pittsburgh Penguins Defenseman Harrison Brunicke made history as the second player born in South Africa to play in the NHL. Former Washington Capitals goaltender Olaf Kolzig was the first, as both players came from Johannesburg, then moved to Canada to become professional hockey players.
Wearing their Centennial Jerseys
The Rangers wore on opening night their new Centennial jerseys honoring their 100th season. Mirroring what the hockey club used to wear when they started in 1926. The old school felt nostalgic, and many fans bought it as soon as it became available at The Garden. There are nine more dates when the Rangers will wear them again at Madison Square Garden.
The Next Game is on the road in Western New York as the Rangers face the Buffalo Sabres at the KeyBank Center on Thursday, October 9th, at 7:00 PM on MSG Network
