HOYAS REMAIN UNBEATEN IN BIG EAST PLAY WITH COMMANDING ROAD VICTORY IN QUEENS

Jamaica, N.Y. – No. 15 Georgetown women’s soccer (9-2-2, 5-0-0 BIG EAST) remained perfect in conference play with a commanding 4-0 victory over St. John’s (2-6-4, 0-3-2 BIG EAST) on Saturday night at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.

The Hoyas controlled the match from start to finish, recording 29 shots to St. John’s three and converting two penalty kicks in the opening 30 minutes to seize control. Georgetown outshot the Red Storm 19-0 in the first half and held a dominant 56-44 possession advantage throughout the 90 minutes.

Henley Tippins led the Hoyas with a brace (two goals), while Natalie Means and Maja Lardner each added goals. Means recorded two assists, and Tippins’ eight shots led all players on the night.

Despite the lopsided result, St. John’s senior goalkeeper Kayla Bower delivered another heroic performance with eight saves—her fifth consecutive match with 7.4 or more saves per game. After setting a career-high 10 saves on Wednesday at Marquette, Bower averaged 9.0 saves per game over the two matches this week.

The loss drops St. John’s to 0-3-2 in BIG EAST play and 2-6-4 overall, while Georgetown extended its conference winning streak to five matches.

FIRST HALF: GEORGETOWN SEIZES CONTROL WITH TWO PENALTY KICKS

Georgetown wasted no time asserting its dominance, recording 19 first-half shots while holding St. John’s without a single attempt on goal.

11th Minute: Tippins Converts First Penalty Kick

The Hoyas opened the scoring in the 12th minute after a video review confirmed a penalty kick for the visitors. Henley Tippins stepped up and struck a line drive past Bower to give Georgetown a 1-0 advantage.

The penalty was awarded after a foul inside the box, and Tippins made no mistake, calmly converting her fourth goal of the season.

St. John’s Best Chance of the Half

St. John’s had its best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes shortly after Georgetown’s first goal. Daniela Monzon delivered a clever heel pass to Leana Ruiz, who sent a cross that landed right in front of the six-yard box. The service found Madison Mariani, but Georgetown goalkeeper Cara Martin and the Hoyas’ defense cleared the danger before St. John’s could capitalize.

It would be the Red Storm’s only real scoring chance of the half.

31st Minute: Means Doubles the Lead

Georgetown doubled its advantage in the 31st minute when Natalie Means tucked home a shot from the penalty spot. The Hoyas were awarded their second penalty kick of the half, and Means calmly converted to make it 2-0.

The goal was Means’ sixth of the season and gave Georgetown a commanding two-goal cushion heading into halftime.

First Half Dominance

Georgetown’s first-half performance was a clinic in possession and offensive pressure:

  • 19 shots (6 on target) to St. John’s 0 shots
  • 5 corner kicks to St. John’s 0 corners
  • 61% possession to St. John’s 39%
  • Kayla Bower: 4 saves to keep the deficit at two goals

SECOND HALF: HOYAS ADD TWO MORE TO SEAL VICTORY

Georgetown continued its offensive onslaught in the second half, adding two more goals to put the match out of reach.

53rd Minute: Lardner Makes It 3-0

Maja Lardner extended Georgetown’s lead to 3-0 in the 53rd minute, finishing off a feed from Natalie Means. The goal was Lardner’s eighth of the season and her fourth shot on target of the night.

Means’ assist was her second of the match, showcasing her playmaking ability and vision in the attacking third.

65th Minute: Tippins Completes the Scoring

Henley Tippins completed the scoring in the 65th minute, recording her second goal of the night and fifth of the season. The goal came off assists from Lizzie Heller and Natalie Means, capping a dominant performance from the Hoyas’ attack.

Tippins led all players with eight shots (three on target) and was a constant threat throughout the match.

St. John’s Finds Late Offensive Spark

St. John’s recorded all three of its shots in the second half, with Daisy Burt delivering a season-high two shots in a personal-best 46 minutes of action. Burt’s two shots on goal were both saved by Georgetown backup goalkeeper Cameron Gabrielson, who entered the match in the 79th minute.

Madison Mariani also registered a shot in the 83rd minute, but it sailed wide left.

KAYLA BOWER: HEROIC EFFORT IN DEFEAT

Despite the 4-0 scoreline, St. John’s senior captain Kayla Bower delivered another stellar performance in goal, recording eight saves on 12 shots on target.

Bower has been a workhorse for the Red Storm over the past five matches, averaging 7.4 saves per game. After setting a career-high 10 saves on Wednesday night at Marquette, Bower logged 9.0 saves per game over the two matches this week.

Bower’s Save Breakdown:

  • First Half: 4 saves (including stops on Lardner, Lohmeyer twice, and Means)
  • Second Half: 4 saves (including stops on Tippins, Montgomery, Lardner, and Covitz)

While the Red Storm struggled to generate offensive chances, Bower’s heroics kept the match from becoming even more lopsided.

GEORGETOWN’S OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER

Georgetown’s attack was relentless, recording 29 total shots and 12 shots on target. The Hoyas’ offensive depth was on full display, with multiple players contributing to the scoring effort.

Henley Tippins: 2 Goals, 8 Shots

Tippins was the star of the night, recording two goals (both in the first half) and leading all players with eight shots. The forward was a constant threat, recording three shots on target and forcing Bower into multiple difficult saves.

Tippins’ Goals:

  • 12th Minute: Penalty kick (4th goal of season)
  • 65th Minute: Assisted by Heller and Means (5th goal of season)

Natalie Means: 1 Goal, 2 Assists

Means was Georgetown’s most complete offensive player, recording a goal and two assists. Her playmaking ability was on full display, as she set up Lardner’s goal in the 53rd minute and assisted on Tippins’ second goal in the 65th minute.

Means also converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute for her sixth goal of the season.

Maja Lardner: 1 Goal, 5 Shots

Lardner recorded her eighth goal of the season in the 53rd minute and led Georgetown with five shots (four on target). The forward was a constant presence in the attacking third and forced Bower into multiple saves.

Lizzie Heller: 1 Assist

Heller recorded an assist on Tippins’ second goal and played a key role in Georgetown’s offensive build-up throughout the match.

DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE: GEORGETOWN SHUTS DOWN ST. JOHN’S

Georgetown’s defense was equally impressive, limiting St. John’s to just three shots (two on target) and zero corner kicks in the first half.

Cara Martin earned the shutout in goal, playing 78 minutes and not facing a single shot on target. Backup goalkeeper Cameron Gabrielson entered in the 79th minute and made two saves on St. John’s’ only two shots on target of the match.

Georgetown’s defensive unit, led by Kaya Hanson and Isabel Boodell, locked down the middle of the field and limited St. John’s to just one offensive chance in the first half.

ST. JOHN’S HONORS 2015 BIG EAST CHAMPIONS

Before the match, the St. John’s Athletic Department welcomed back members of the 2015 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship team in recognition of the 10th anniversary of their conference crown.

The ceremony honored the legacy of one of the most successful teams in St. John’s women’s soccer history, providing a moment of celebration before a difficult match for the current Red Storm squad.
