MINNEAPOLIS, MN – When Randy Moss speaks about wide receivers, the football world listens. The Pro Football Hall of Famer and Vikings Ring of Honor member returned to ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” this week after his courageous battle with bile duct cancer, and he used his platform to showcase two of the NFL’s most electrifying talents: former LSU teammates Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase.
The “Wide Receiver U” Debate
Moss didn’t waste time with pleasantries, diving straight into one of college football’s most contentious debates: Which program truly deserves the “Wide Receiver U” moniker? While Ohio State has long claimed this title, Jefferson and Chase made an emphatic case for their alma mater, LSU.
“There isn’t much to say, man. The proof is in the pudding,” Jefferson declared with characteristic confidence. “What we’ve done already, what we’ve been doing in the league… we’re Wide Receiver U. Regardless of any other conversation or any opinions. The proof is in the pudding.”
Chase, never one to be outdone by his former teammate, added succinctly: “They see what we’ve been putting out.”
The Numbers Don’t Lie
The statistical evidence supporting their claim is overwhelming. Jefferson, selected 22nd overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, has already accumulated 7,557 receiving yards and 41 touchdowns in just over four seasons. His recent milestone achievement – tying Minneapolis native and former Vikings ball boy Larry Fitzgerald as the youngest player in NFL history to record 500 catches at 26 years and 90 days – underscores his exceptional productivity.
Chase, drafted fifth overall in 2021, has been equally impressive for Cincinnati, recording 5,616 career receiving yards and 47 touchdowns. Both players have established themselves as perennial Pro Bowl selections and cornerstone pieces for their respective franchises.

2025 Season Performance
This season has continued the excellence both receivers have displayed throughout their careers. Jefferson enters Week 3 with 12 catches for 192 yards and one touchdown through Minnesota’s first two games, maintaining his status as one of the league’s most reliable targets despite the Vikings’ quarterback uncertainty.
Chase has been even more explosive early in the 2025 campaign, hauling in 15 receptions for 268 yards and three touchdowns, helping propel the Bengals to a 2-0 start. His chemistry with Joe Burrow remains one of the NFL’s most dangerous combinations, though Sunday’s matchup will test both receivers’ adaptability with backup quarterbacks under center.
Competitive Fire Burns Bright
Despite their friendship forged in Baton Rouge, where they helped LSU capture the 2019 CFP National Championship, Jefferson and Chase maintain an intense competitive rivalry that pushes both to new heights.
“It’s always a competition,” Jefferson explained to Moss. “But we don’t talk about it, you know what I’m sayin’?” Chase interjected. “Bro goes out there and does his thing, and he knows I’m coming [right behind him]. We do our best to out-step one another. That’s how it’s always been. And it’s always going to be like that.”
Rising Above Quarterback Changes
Sunday’s Vikings-Bengals matchup at U.S. Bank Stadium presents unique challenges for both superstars. Minnesota will start Carson Wentz, who signed just before the regular season began, in place of injured rookie J.J. McCarthy. Cincinnati will counter with Jake Browning after Joe Burrow suffered a toe injury in last week’s victory.
Jefferson embraces the challenge, demonstrating the elite mindset that separates great receivers from good ones.
“I feel like, regardless of who’s throwing that ball, we’ve been making it a point to where no quarterback is the person who makes this whole boat float,” Jefferson stated. “We really rely on ourselves to go out there and beat the coverage and catch the ball – regardless of where the ball is thrown and how the ball is thrown, and who is throwing it.”
He continued with supreme confidence: “I can probably speak [for Chase], too. We always feel like we’re the best out there on the field. In order to show that, no quarterback can say they’re the one who ‘made’ Ja’Marr Chase or ‘made’ Justin Jefferson. We go out there ourselves and put in the work regardless of who’s throwing that ball.”
Sideline Trash Talk Expected
While Jefferson and Chase won’t share the field simultaneously, their competitive banter will undoubtedly continue from the sidelines. Moss, clearly enjoying the dynamic between his guests, asked what happens when one is making plays while the other watches.
“Oh, I’m on the sideline, and I’m callin’ his name, for sure,” Chase admitted with a grin. “He knows that. He knows that.”
Jefferson was equally candid about their ongoing rivalry: “Shoot, if he’s gonna be talkin’ to me, I’m gonna be talking back to him. Best believe we’re gonna have that competitive aspect the whole game. I’m gonna get in his ear, he’s gonna get in mine, and we’re gonna see who comes out on top.”
Stakes and Implications
Sunday’s contest carries significant implications for both franchises. The Vikings (1-1) desperately need a victory to avoid falling behind in the competitive NFC North, while the Bengals (2-0) seek to maintain their perfect start and establish early momentum in the AFC playoff race.
For Jefferson and Chase, the game represents another opportunity to showcase why LSU deserves recognition as the premier wide receiver development program in college football. Their individual performances will be scrutinized not just for fantasy football implications, but as evidence in the ongoing “Wide Receiver U” debate.
Legacy in the Making
As both players continue building Hall of Fame-caliber careers, their impact extends beyond individual statistics. They’ve elevated the standard for what elite wide receiver play looks like in the modern NFL, combining route-running precision, contested-catch ability, and game-breaking speed.
Their success has also validated LSU’s receiver development program, inspiring future recruits and cementing the Tigers’ reputation as a pipeline to NFL stardom. With both players still in their prime years, the “Wide Receiver U” debate may ultimately be settled not by historical precedent, but by the continued excellence of Jefferson and Chase.
Sunday’s showdown at U.S. Bank Stadium promises to deliver another chapter in their ongoing rivalry, with both superstars eager to prove they remain among the NFL’s elite playmakers, regardless of who’s delivering the football.
